2022 Super Bowl Game/Commercials

Exactly! I bought and listened to a lot of those halftime performers “back in the day.” Very retro!

Absolutely. This will sound crazy, but I have even been known to
start to tear up just hearing the opening chords of Lose Yourself.
Just something about it. And I am old!

Amy Schneider, the recent big Jeopardy winner listened to Lose Yourself before every game. I agree on the lyrics being positive and uplifting.

Cool. Didn’t know that. She has great taste! I love Jeopardy and now I like Amy even more!

I get it, very emotional for me too. Not crazy!

How can one not do the head bop when the chorus starts?!

Maybe I’m alone -but all the theatrics take the focus off the music.

Why can’t four or five people be on stage and play their instruments (if they do) and sing?

Why do we need hundreds of choreographed dancers, etc. Yes, I’m a different generation but how does one focus with this?

Would you say the same about a theater Broadway musical that has oodles of people on a stage singing, dancing, playing instruments with props and scenery to the max on the stage as well??

It’s usually the main characters doing the singing in these plays - so does all the other things on stage distract from the singer in a musical?!

That’s not a concert, that’s a show - I guess when I hear concert, I think of the band and maybe some additional singing.

U2, for example, doesn’t even have back up singers.

It is the half time show - and not half time concert - so maybe I miss the distinction. I’m going to see the Eagles next month though - and I suspect there won’t be hundreds of distracting people on the stage!!

Yep - I just don’t get it.

Seems like apples and oranges between Super Bowl halftime and something like an Eagles concert.

Have a great time at the Eagles concert and be sure to Take It Easy!

Yes and no - the Stones, Sir Paul, the Boss, U2, the Who, etc. rely only on themselves.

I am not sure where this coming from or going to…last night’s performance was a melange of rap/hip-hop superstars. It wasn’t Bruce, Paul, U2, the Rolling Stones etc as principal artists. Rather, it was many, many artists.

If there were dancers etc, I am not sure what is wrong with that.

That’s why I said:

I realize I’m the exception…not the rule.

I love to watch dancing. Best dancing last night: Dre Day guys with Kendrick Lamar. Dancing I could have done without - the women around 50 cent. I also thought Mary J Blige sounded just a touch out of breath because of dancing, and would have preferred her voice at full power since it’s an amazing instrument. But I do think there needs to be that element of spectacle to a halftime show, and definitely prefer large #s of dancers to whatever The Weeknd was doing last year…and I say that as a fan of The Weekend’s music.

Cool. Perhaps the producers of last night’s event thought that the extras would enhance the performance.

I honestly wish they had done a large open stage with 360-degree stadium viewing. Even for the tv audience (like me), the sets in the boxes didn’t come across well.

Putting that aside, focusing on rap/hip-hop was genius.

I’m a bit older (“ahem, 60”) and I thoroughly enjoyed the halftime show. I absolutely love all the older music (Rolling Stones, U2, Bruce Springsteen, etc…) and have seen most of those bands in concert several times, but I really enjoyed listening to something other than “classic rock” last night. I’ve always loved Snoop Dog - he’s a total entertainer. And my kids have taught me to appreciate Eminem. It’s funny, the person that I ended up enjoying most was Dr. Dre. Who knew??

Regarding the stage set:

Set paid homage to L.A.

](Super Bowl halftime show taps into millennial nostalgia)

The set featured architectural reproductions of Tam’s Burgers, Randy’s Donuts and the Compton courthouse, as well as a map of Compton on the stadium floor.

I wish I could remember which music person said he hoped never to be invited to do the Superbowl halftime show. It’s great exposure but it’s risky. You only get 12 minutes and you don’t get much control. It is very difficult for anyone who is accustomed to playing full concerts to boil it down to 12 minutes and have it sound and feel genuine.

I don’t watch football so the only halftime show I’ve ever seen was Bruce Springsteen but I was super turned off by the hordes of extras with their phony excitement surrounding the stage and waving their hands in the air. Just cringe worthy.

I don’t really watch sports (ha, including Super Bowl) but thanks to this thread tracked down the video/mustic for Lose Yourself (featuring clips from 8 Mile). Never really followed Eminem - but this was exceptionally cinematic and cool!

I guess I’m astounded at how many people didn’t know who the half time performers were and never heard the music. I was thrilled when it was announced who would be performing. And the surprise of 50 cent was a highlight for me. The songs sung were simply all over the place at one time or another.
As far as the dancers - loved them!
