2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

@nittanylion1510 same for my d!!! She applied to penn state up and Pitt as soon as applications came online

She doesn’t check the portal, but I do! Lol

We will know more by dec deadline

Meanwhile good luck!!! And keep in touch

@amach4 @ziveli513 Son applied to engineering. Also submitted subject test scores (Math 2 780; Physics 740).

I don’t really understand the thinking behind the admissions process here. The most irritating part of it is that calling it rolling admissions and then not sending an email when your decision is ready requires you to check the site every day. Every “chance me” site we’ve looked at has him at 99% getting into PSU, so we’re not really worried that he won’t get in. But seriously, two months to wait for a rolling decision when you’re in the top 1% or 2% of applicants is unacceptable.

Good luck to you all!

Have hope everyone! My daughter just got accepted this morning in the Communication College at University Park. She only had a 1220 superscored SAT so definitely midrange (she was lopsided with low math and high reading/writing scores). They are definitely not just accepted high stats people.

@txmom2016 I completely agree!

We applied aug 10, application under review since aug 15

Can’t use the excuse that penn state gets so many applications either

That excuse has been said over and over by some on cc

But as i have shared my d applied to the Ohio state university sept 11 and heard back in 8 weeks

OSU main is just as big if not slightly bigger than university park

And at least according to online info, just as selective

And my d got an email from OSU

It is frustrating that penn state isn’t transparent that’s all I’m saying

And that some on cc feel the need to deny the desire to express frustration by saying oh well thats how it is at penn state

I reserve the right to be frustrated!

That said eventually we will know all lol

@cotton2017 congrats!!!
What gpa uw and w may I ask?
And when did she apply?

Yes now I’m noticing midrange stats being accepted. Penn State doesn’t super score so what was the highest test score in one sitting? @Cotton2017

Thanks for the update @Cotton2017 ! And congrats to your daughter! My son is also “lopsided” with high reading/writing and low math test scores. His math course grades are high though because he opted for college prep level instead of honors/AP.

He applied to the College of Liberal Arts for English. I had been wondering if PSU expected English and Comm majors to have high math test scores. You have officially given me hope.

@cotton2017 just to be clear, no one said only accepting high stats people
Just that until last week high stats acceptances came first — as reported by psu admissions

And your d has a high gpa 4.0?
I just saw on the decisions thread. That’s relevant (and awesome)

Also no one says all high stats will hear quickly, some will wait for whatever reason, their major choice etc
Sorry to repeat, just want to be clear, hope that’s not annoying!

She has a 3.9UW/4.4W GPA. Highest in one sitting was 1210. Very happy for her.

@cotton2017. So exciting! Congrats again

From psu admissions website—( gpa counts more than standard tests )

“Placing in the upper end of both ranges increases the likelihood of being offered your first choice of campus and/or major. Placing in the lower end may require you to be more flexible in making your campus (and perhaps major) choices.

SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math

SAT 1220, 1260, 1240 accepted to UP. It is 3/4 based on GPA, pay attention to that and majority were DUS and applied early August.

Based on those numbers I think my son should be good for UP, but he applied to Smeal which I keep reading is really hard. And his HS has a 100pt grading scale so I don’t really know his GPA on a 4.0 scale.

GPA W-97 U-94
SAT 1420 (790M/630RW)
AP/Hon - 18 (never took on level unless it was the only option with electives)
Varsity Football & Wrestling (Captain of both)

I’m driving myself crazy with all this!!!

@amomoffour Where have you heard that it is 3/4 GPA? In the past, it was 2/3 GPA and 1/3 “other” - which was SAT and other factors (EC, Legacy, etc.). I thought this year’s admissions criteria actually walked away from the 2/3 & 1/3 statement?

"The most important piece of our review is your academic record, which represents your individual four years of academic development. "

For everyone complaining that Penn State does not turn around their admissions quickly, they have never promised that and many posters have identified that they really should be “modified rolling admissions”. Admissions doesn’t promise a turn around in 10 days, 10 weeks, whatever. They state, “if in by this date, you will hear by this date”.

"Applicants are evaluated on a modified rolling admissions schedule. "

So, while I agree, yes, they should let the high stats kids know earlier - should be a slam dunk! They have not promised that. Would it help with yield? Probably. I know it is tough to sweat it out.

@TXMom2016 I would encourage your kid to put in the time for Schreyer. It is an amazing opportunity. Based on his stats, he certainly seems like a strong candidate and general admissions shouldn’t be a problem.

@mamawitch I hear you, waiting is hard!

Your sons stats look great, though As you say Smeal is very competitive

When did your son apply if you don’t mind?

And if he doesn’t get accepted to Smeal, I understand you can call admissions immediately and ask to be reconsidered for DUS

If accepted dus at university park, Then he can work his way through the pre major classes and hopefully qualify for Smeal in his junior year

Or maybe he will choose a different major by then

So many factors !

@lucyvanpelt but complaining about waiting is a release lol
Helps pass time between obsessively checking portal for decision
?

@ziveli513 He applied Oct 15th with the common app.

And I forgot to mention we are OOS - ME
Not sure how much of a factor that is.

My impression is that the release of admissions is much more structured this year than in the past. Two years ago my oldest applied mid-November (when Nov 30 was the Priority date), and was accepted 2 days after her transcript was received. This year, my daughter with a comparable academic record applied mid-August, and just heard today.

@neuromom4 congrats on today!

What are each of their stats if you don’t mind sharing?

Daughter 1:
ACT 30
SAT 1400
GPA 3.88UW/4.93W
all honors + 7 APs
selective enrollment college prep public high school - doesn’t rank
applied for Communication

Daughter 2:
SAT 1230
GPA 3.83UW/4.93W
all honors + 8AP + 1 dual enrollment
magnet program in neighborhood high school in Chicago - top 5%
applied for Human Development/Family Studies

very similar extracurriculars

out of state
I’m an alum (in 1988, I applied early September with SAT of 1230 and heard mid-Oct!)
