Ha ! PSU Admissions keeps the “we can’t get our act together” streak going, DD got the famous Dec 24th postcard today and upon checking the portal we see now the “deferred to Jan 31” message like many others.
OOS D17 EA Nursing UP, campus 10/13, bubble stats for her major with years of EMS & Hospital experience + Varsity athletics Jan 31st may be too late as other direct Nursing programs have already said yes, CWRU decision tomorrow may put it all to rest.
@mattcccc my son put Main Campus/Summer/Branch and still got the same deferral note I truly don’t think they even looked at all these applications. Grateful it wasn’t a NO…and only one more month of waiting. They could have offered any of those options to him…
I think that is the point. They can’t get through them all. They probably looked at what they had left, looked at the rate of decisions per day and then drew the proverbial line in the queue and sent out notices.
@MelioraScott I think you are right, seems not based on stats of individuals but on sheer volume of applicants
According to the message we got in the portal it says being deferred will not negatively impact the application
But that due to sheer volume admissions needs more time
So am hoping for the best, we still have every reason to hope for admitted based on our original application strengths
PSU is one the largest and most popular Universities in the country and I am an alumni who loved my PSU experience. They should have prepared for this onslaught of applications and not over promised the EA date. Yes, technically, deferred to priority admission date is in fact a decision but does not meet the expectations of those who went out of their way to prepare and submit their applications early. Although I understand they are overwhelmed, it makes people feel underwhelmed and unappreciated, especially when other universities are making offers of admission. It is a two way street for the students that worked hard for years to prepare for acceptance to a world class university. The University needs to convince the students that they should attend as much as the students need to prove themselves. I hope they accelerate their efforts and get the priority decisions (formerly labeled as EA Decisions) out before Jan 31
Agree with everyone else. The deferred applicants seem to be solely based on the fact that they cannot effectively make a decision because of the high volume of applications they received (Which they should have anticipated) but is honestly better than them just flat out rejecting people so that is the bright side. My application still says “under review” and I applied back in October so not as early as some people, but still early enough. Don’t really know how I feel about my chances, but whatever happens it happens for a reason.
Not a great 1st impression… Is this any indication of how hard it will be to get classes, housing, time with professors??? This “Deferral” is clearly due to being overwhelmed by applications and not a need to review/compare with priority applicants. 50K for an OOS student and they don’t give much in scholarships… Might be time to cross this one off the list.
Not entirely true if you look at the other posts on the other thread, clearly there are kids that got in with lower stats so that rule of thumb doesn’t entirely apply across the board. My son’s school had kids accepted that had lower stats than him but their majors were smaller / less competitive majors…so to me it it’s really a mystery.
For the people with the lowers stats who got deferred, they had to at least look at them and make the decision to not send the lower stat people to a branch campus, instead, review them more. Right?
To add to what I just said^^ my friend applied to SMEAL on 11/30 with a 2.8 weighted GPA and a 1240 SAT and she was admitted to Penn state Harrisburg. Like, that’s an obvious branch campus applicant
Only an insider admissions expert would be able to tell anyone how they sort, analyze, and process so much data. We may never really know how the process really works.
So it seems at this point that some Rolling Admission applicants got decisions before those of us who applied Early. On that note I assume that whether we applied Early or Rolling won’t matter at this point and the decisions will be random. All we know is we have to hear by Jan 31st.
