Omg my portal has the Nittany lion on it instead of old main! It says it can’t retreieve my application details and to check back soon. I THINK THIS MEANS ILL HEAR SOON! Not too excited though because both my friends heard today and got deferred and I have around the same stats as them so that’s what I’ll probs get
Do you think Penn State will still give EA applicants priority if they truly did not/could not get to all of them?
@MelioraScott Seriously?
@beejdoop It would be nice if they did but it doesn’t appear that they do considering some Rolling Admission candidates have heard before Early Action. Of course only admissions knows for sure though.
Everyone has to remember this is the FIRST year they have had Early Action… so although they are smart, the only way to really know is based on similar circumstances at similar schools, and they just werent up to the task. Its ok, its better than botching it OR waiting till the last minute THEN deciding. They knew what they could do and based the decision on that. For those of us who have got in, it doesnt mean that we were better, they simply got to our app first or had fewer people in our major fields. Gotta have patience when big schools try new things.
@off2co11ege Was there something you disagreed with?
@ZeeMeZeeYou Exactly right. Life doesn’t go as planned. Roll with it.
same here! all my friends who heard today got deferred. i’m thinking its a deferral wave.
I checked right after I posted that message and it turns out i got in!!
@HDcollegeready Were you accepted today? Congratulations!
@kansha yes i was accepted tn around 10:50ish. thanks!!!
Daughter was just admitted to Smeal, university park, fall of 2019.
1440 SAT, 3.5 uw/3.8 weighted
I have watched with interest the debates over Smeal and stats, etc, but at least in my daughter’s case it seems that PSU definitely did a wholistic review of her application. She took all AP and Honors Gifted classes through high school. She has amazing ECs. Great SAT scores. The gpa was lower than she liked, but she had a C in AP us history which is taught by a notoriously hard teacher and has nothing to do with how she will perform in business school, but it hurt her Gpa. She is more than just numbers, and that must have come through in her application. So don’t be discouraged by others opinions. Keep the faith until a decision tells you otherwise. I knew the decision could go either way, and I was nervous for her especially because of a lot of the posts I read here, but we are incredibly grateful that PSU feels that she would be a good fit. Her sister is a junior at PSU (communications) and has been very happy there.
Good luck to everyone and think positive!
My application is still under review. Am I going to get denied?
Anyone early action who was deferred to priority decision group 1/31 new deadline—
Care to share stats?
My pa d
8/10 application complete/under review for eberly Chem
11/16 switched to DUS , better fit for d intent
4.0 uw, 5.1 w , high school sends lots to psu main
AP, honors etc. good EC’s
EA decision 12/18 deferred to priority decision group 1/31 with message doesn’t mean “negatively impacts chances”
I would love to know info about others deferred if anyone wants to share
If not, happy holidays, best wishes for good outcomes !
Peace ?
I am curious if the EA applications that got deferred to the “Priority Decision Group” will be reviewed before the applications they received 11/2 - 11/30, that are not considered EA applications??? Does anyone have any insight on this?
@off2co11ege I don’t think it matters. I know someone who submitted 11/2 and heard back on 12/5 with an acceptance. She was OOS as well.
@kansha That’s kind of what I though. I guess it was just wishful thinking, that we would hear back sooner than later.
Bummer. D just received a deferred letter. She applied end of October. Solid GPA 3.9 but didn’t do well on either SAT or ACT - low low 20s. Great extracurricular activities. I’m still thinking it’s going to be a good outcome but would have liked to have the waiting game end already.
Wanted to share my stats because I was also defered like a lot of other people

Gender: Male
Applied date: 10/16
Applied Early Action?: yes

@snowcone23 Don’t give up hope. Your D was deferred because they are overwhelmed, not because of her ACT/SAT. Her deferred result is much better than a rejection. Hang in there. Wishing you luck.
Does anyone here know if most students who are admitted but choose elsewhere actually decline?
Creating new spots for others?
Since the deadline to accept is May 1, I’m curious how the declines work
Enrolled stats vs admitted stats at UP are lower
So presumably many of the high stats admits decline
Creating space for students who had lower stats but may have had to wait weeks longer
Do students still get accepted past may 1?
I know that students who apply after nov 30 can still be admitted, but with decisions for them after 1/31 and as space allows
