This is JMO but based on what Dean Nondorf has been saying the past few days in zoom sessions with alums, prospective applicants and their families, it does not appear there is much if any change between Admissions’ expectations this year vs. other years in terms of who will be showing up. It’s possible that there is a usual amount of summer melt but it’s not clear at all that there will be late calls off the W/L. UC will very likely not be calling anyone in late summer for a couple of reasons: 1) that’s not happened in the past, and this year doesn’t appear to have different outcomes as noted above; and 2) Committed students who can’t or don’t want to show up on campus may well have the opportunity to participate via remote. UC has not yet opened up pre-registration or housing lottery for returning students; all that is still being figured out. It’s very possible that there will be significant amounts of remote learning in general.
While theoretically there is a lot of uncertainty this year, I concur with @GerBrazStudent that in reality the current problems related to Covid won’t really change matriculation much, if at all, beyond this point.
Again, schools are planning for delivering education remotely for students who are unable to return to campus because of travel restrictions or health conditions. Paperwork would not get in the way of international students.
@GerBrazStudent what schools have said that they will support some students on campus and some off? Mixed modality is more difficult to deliver than either all remote or all in person. Having a class of 20 where 17 are in person and 3 are remote is a nightmare. I have enough experience in business meetings to know that you don’t want to be one of the 3 remote ones.
Since we are talking about WL, an individual school doesn’t have control of their own destiny. What others do around them can have a huge impact.
I know that a larger percentage of prospective students are considering taking a gap year this year–does anyone have an idea of 1. what percent of prospective students UChicago will actually allow to gap and 2. by what date would these students need to declare by?
Does anyone else find the whole situation pretty ridiculous?
I get that Corona is affecting the selection process and all that, but how come that it’s been weeks and they just don’t give any update at all? Not sure how the other unis are dealing with their WL this year, but they could at least send out an update.
I’m pretty frustrated with the situation and just needed to vent. Is anyone else feeling like that?
It makes me feel UChicago is more like the company to run the education business. So, it’s ok. You can find your good business points like less cost for the education, more high chances to get good grades for four years or so on. But if you can admit later from Waitlist, enjoy your moment! It’s all ok whatever. Your value will be continue to your future.
It seems like they’re still waiting as well. I contacted my regional admissions officer a week ago for official transcripts and she told me to update it on my portal. I guess that means there’s still stuff to do?
So no one has received any update on their application status since the couple of acceptances last month? I’m just surprised that they supposedly haven’t sent out any final rejection yet.
I get that they’re waiting for students to decide if they will take a gap year, but they should at least inform us on when we should expect to receive some news. As an international student, although I have already committed to another school, I need to know in advance if I’m going to move halfway across the world, especially during a pandemic. Again, although I understand the circumstances, I find it a little disrespectful that they’re dragging us for so long.
Anyone else feel like they might not take anymore off the waitlist? Like holding it open this long could’ve been a precaution for a drop that never happened?
^ Part of the hold-up might be that they aren’t sure what phase of re-opening will happen by fall. Chicago is slower to re-open than other parts of the country or even other parts of the state.
