2050 overall, but 580 on reading?

Ok, so obviously a 2050 overall is a solid score, but what if that includes a 580 reading? If this is the breakdown: CR-580, M-710, W-760...will colleges be turned off by the CR and not care that the overall is a 2050? Or, will they admire that the writing is so high and not worry so much about the CR? For all of you who are acing writing but failing CR, I feel your pain.

Uh i’m pretty sure with the SAT, they look at your overall composite. THey put more emphasis on the score out of 1600 too. It would have been better if that 580 was in writing

580 and 710 is going to hurt you at top 30 schools; 2050 is a passable/semi-decent score at most top schools, but 580+710 is pretty low.

You need to retake the 580.

So, basically, with a 580, schools like UVA, UNC, Northwestern, Michigan, etc. are not too likely?

You can look up the middle 50% scores for all your schools here.

Do you have time to retake? You might want to really focus on reading since your other scores are so good.

i actually havent taken the test yet, i take it in march. but those were the scores of my latest practice test.

It sounds like you’re a junior so you have lots of time to improve. Keep working on practice CR sections. Make sure you go back over each section after you’ve scored it to see where you went wrong (and what you did right). IMO that’s the most important part of studying.

Here’s some good advice from an old post:

Green 1: "I used to have the problem of over-analyzing these passages. I’d think “well really it should be this one, but I’m guessing there is some hidden meaning so I’ll go with this one.” Well that didn’t work because these really don’t have any deep meaning most of the time and the answer is pretty straight-forward. Unless it says ‘infer’ in the question the answer is normally in the passage itself. I had to be able to distinguish between these types of passages and AP Language type passages because they are pretty different in what they are looking for.

Best advice I’ve gotten: These passages aren’t out to make a political statement, they aren’t meant to trick you, and the answer is somewhere in the passage."

Michigan specifically accepted both my brothers with approximately 1900 on their SAT’s… but maybe that was just because they’re international students.

i would say that 580 would hurt you. I was a lot like you, I got high Math scores, kinda bad CR scores. I would advise you to read more especially New York Times editorials and stuff alike. I think if you can get that up above 600, you will be in a much better position. You might want to get up that math too if you’re looking at business/engineering/physics or something like that where quantitative skills are important. I feel like schools look mostly at Math and CR because those are really your abilities to handle material. Writing is just a measure of how far a long you are in writing, but I don’t think it’s AS important because most schools try to teach you how to write again anyways.
