Yes...............Even if the school counts writing, it's not as important as cr and math, and your combination there would be just average for top shools, with your cr falling below average at all.

no!!!! if you have great ECs and a perfect on the math you don't have to.. it's hollistic remember and do you really just want to sit through another exam??? try the ACT and see how it goes

NOOOOOOOOO!!! You are in the top 99% for the SAT if you retake it you have a chance of lowering your score in the Math Or Verbal section.

thanks everyone for your responses!!!

ok this clears a lot of my doubts as well.

but how about my score?

2220:
Math: 780
CR : 750
Writing: 690 (ouch)
essay: 8 (do they look at the essay score?)

Most colleges take the best composit. A 680 on cr will not help you at top schools. I really advise people to look at the source when people are telling you SATs don't matter. You will often find that they share the low score plight.

yeah, i've got the same situation as stanford dreamer...but just change up the the subjects...680 in writing, 800 in cr, and 750 in math......though it is below average for stanford, which i'm assuming you wanna go...the entire process is holistic, so if you've got a good gpa,ec's, recs, and essays to back up yer SAT scores, you should be have a good chance

Piping hot, you're in a much better situation having your low score be writing. Before buying the whole holistic thing, take a lot at how consistent common data sets are year over year--stats matter first.

The first time I took the SAT, I scored a 2240 (CR 650, M 790, W 800).

Honestly, a 650 (or in your case, a 680) on CR isn't that great for elite schools.

Since I was looking at Penn, Cornell, Georgetown, etc., I decided to take the SAT once more and really study for the CR... I got a 740 second time around, a 90 point increase.

A 650 for most of my schools was only better than 25% of students, whereas my new score of 740 is better than 75% of students... I believe that makes a big difference.
