21 years old with GED going for UGA

Sounds crazy right?

Well in highschool I diddled my years away. I skipped school so much they asked me to leave. I came back the next year straightened up and made Bs and a couple As. I had to leave and get my GED which I did well on. 98 percentile in Science.
Battery Average 602.

Now I know I have a lot of work ahead of me before I even apply to UGA. Years.
I want to become a veterinarian and work with large animals (which I understand there is a large shortage of). I do not want to become a Vet Tech and make $26k for the rest of my life. That is just not going to cut it.

Now I understand that Im going to have to take the SAT or the ACT (or both?). What is the best way to prep myself for that? For two year schools if Im correct you do not need to take the SATs or ACTs. Will taking classes at a two year school help me prep for the tests or will I need to take special classes designed for preping for the SAT/ACT?

Im going to have to raise my GPA. Would there be classes at Athens Tech (whom offers degrees in vet tech) I could take to help me raise my GPA and go towards my 4 years of normal classes or 4 years of animal medical classes?

Im going to have to put in a good few hours of volunteer work at animal care facilities. I understand places like Animal Control are good for dogs and cats but where would I go for Cows, Horses, Llamas, etc?

What can I do to raise my chances and stand out on my applications for UGA?
I fear they are going to look and see GED and toss it out.

Two year schools vary on their requirements for SAT/ACT. In many cases you have to take either that or their placement tests. You’re obviously smart - You could self-study for the SAT fairly successfully. I don’t think just taking classes at any school will prepare you for the tests. I don’t know UGA (or much of anything you’re interested in), but I think an essay that says what you said in your post (with more detail and cleaned up of course) would probably help a lot - show that you’ve gotten your act together.

I doubt if they are going to see GED and toss it out. Lots of people have non-traditional life stories.

Good luck!
