I want to apply to HYP, ivies, Stanford, caltech, mit, and all that other overrated jazz=)

should i retake? if so when? also, could you please give me strategies on how to study? i need to bring up writing and math obviously (i got an 80 on the psat math and 76 on writing though sadly...cr was actually my worst section)

also, how should i maintain what i have and ensure that my scores don't end up going down??

Thanks for taking the time to answer my post!

oh yeah i forgot to add that one thing i'm concerned about is the drop from my psat score to my sat...will it hurt my chances for national merit?

skatj go to the ivy league calculator located in the cc web site. you are very much mistaken to think that a score of 2230 or higher is not good enough for ivy entrance.

I'm at 1490/2170 (superscored), and I'm saying you shouldn't retake. Your M+V is >1500, so you shouldn't worry. Personally, the only reason I'm retaking is because it's a big difference for a safety scholarship ($8000/year) for that 10 points on math for me. But you're good, don't worry! (these people on CC are super-humans!)

I got a 2240 and i'm retaking it. You should only retake, though, if you know you can do a lot better (50+ pts). I got a 700 in CR and a 770 in Math, i'm pretty sure i can pull the math up to 800 (if i don't its fine) and the CR by at least 60 pts.

I got a 2230 too. I got an 800 CR by accident, a 720 math (I consistently do 800s at home) and a 710 writing (I usually do 760s), so I'm retaking in June. I'm shooting for >2300 since I'd rather feel "safer" with a higher SAT score when applying to college.

I took it in October, scored
Math: 800
Writing: 700
CR: 690
Total: 2190

Then took it in March, and scored
Math: 720 (Yeah, I got careless)
Writing: 790
CR: 710
Total: 2220
Superscored, it's a 2300/2400. Should I retake?

And I'm also thinking of applying to Ivies.

In my opinion DO NOT retake (especially a 3rd time).

If you are rejected (like previously stated) it will not be because of your SAT scores. I had a 2120 SAT (superscored) and got into Harvard, MIT, Brown, Cornell, WashU, Georgetown, and Northwestern. SAT scores are not everything, and instead of taking them again and spending a lot of time studying, I used that time towards my grades, extracurriculars, etc. And I think that matters more in the long run.

^^^^ and to go along with that, Harvard had more than 3000+ ppl apply with perfect scores (in either math and/or reading). to the <2000 ppl who got in, it WASN'T because of their scores. So to retake a 2230 would be a waste of time. No one is guaranteed a shot at HYPS because of their scores

It means when you add the highest scores in each section. So if you got, let's say a 640 on critical reading and 700 on math the first time, and 740 on critical reading and 620 on math the second time, the superscore is 1480, the sum of the highest scores in each section. Most colleges look at the highest scores in each SAT section.
