Your PSAT in Jr. year should be your guide. Don’t fail to take it: you already scored high enough, 225(0), to make NMF and that will surely translate into at least some scholarship money.

Rarely would I think a 2250 warrants a retake. You have to keep in mind the opportunity cost - what would you do with the time that you would otherwise be practicing for the retake? Is it something worthwile or just watching tv?

As the vast majority of students do better on the second sitting AND given that you are only a sophomore and have lots of time - I would come down on the side of a retake. Best of luck.

People often say this, but I don’t see much evidence that it’s true. Maybe the most selective schools stop differentiating over 2300, but I’m not even convinced that’s true. There may be a point of diminishing return, but I don’t think a person who scored a 2250 as a sophomore has reached it yet.

^ Ditto what Hunt said.

You should retake it. S took it in May of sophomore year and got a 2230 and then studied over the summer and fall and retook it in November of junior year. He got a 2360. You have room to grow…Good luck!

Yes, since you are a sophomore retake it! But don’t stress out over it, just look at it as a great opportunity to do even better. And just one more time, don’t keep trying to get little improvements.

Thank you for all of your input
I’m probably going to retake it during the fall/winter of my junior year :)

if you’ve made up your mind then go for it… but some words of caution:

1) if you retake after 2250+, it looks to colleges like you have nothing better to do but retake the SAT

2) u could spend all that time taken to study to develop ur ECs better… just think about it in perspective → would a college take a 2250 with amazing ECs or a 2300+ with meh ECs?
Clearly the 2250. there’s a cutoff, i’m led to believe, and i think ur within that.

but hey, its ur call in the end.

1) How do you know this? I don’t see any reason to believe that retaking a 2250 would look like anything other than a student trying to demonstrate their skill in every possible facet. Do not forget that while the SAT is not everything, it is still a major part of the application process.

2) Unless OP is seriously anal retentive, I doubt that the limited time spent studying for the SAT excludes the possibility of excellent ECs. It’s not an either-or issue. If OP is intelligent enough to get into a top school, I should hope that he or she is intelligent enough to properly balance the many areas of his or her academic life.

why not retake it

Everybody takes it more than once
Except me of course

Whenyou retake it , they take your highest score from each section out of your 2 tests. Retake it. You have potential in scoring higher

nope people overestimate the worth of the sat; gpa is far more important

Yeah, normally, GPA would be more important…it’s just that since I’m international (Canada), I feel like the SAT would also be quite important.

retake, it seems like you did well on the practice ones.

I wouldn’t retake it. Statistics show that when taking the SAT a second time, people usually get worse in the Writing section. Also, you’re in high school. I would take the good score you got this time, and focus more on AP classes and AP tests.

I heard 2300 is the “golden score” where anything between 2300 and 2400 is fine.
