23 UCSD Professors suggest the University of California shut down UCSC, UCR, and UCM

"It's not what any university wants to hear, but in a letter written by 23 UC San Diego professors, UC Santa Cruz was one of three schools singled out to be shut down as a response to the UC budget crisis.

This letter comes as the UC system grapples with less funding, furloughs and 10 percent salary cuts across the board. The controversial letter, written by Sociology Professor Andrew Scull and endorsed by 22 other professors from various departments, said the state can not support a 10 campus system any longer.

"It's simply not the case that all campus entities are of equal value to our goals," reads the letter.

...

One part of the letter, which gives other solutions to the UC budget issues, reads, "we propose that you urge the President and the Regents to acknowledge that UCSC, UCR and UC Merced are insubstantial measure teaching institutions...whose funding levels and budgets should be reorganized to match that reality."

I am in favor of shutting down UCM but not the other two. No offences BTW!! and if any of the UCs are to be shut down, then enrollment should be increased in the remaining 9 of them.

can you say owned?

not in favor of shutting down any schools but I think they’re right about the prioritizing funding deal

It makes me sad to see that it was UCSD professors who wrote this letter.

Hahah it’s like no child left behind for UCs.

UCSC, UCR

are nationally recognized universities. Why not just charge more for the “elite” Universities such as UCSD? If UCSD is really a top school then they would be without a doubt worth the money. (And i am not saying we should get rid of financial aid)

I don’t think UCSD is much of a powerhouse when it comes to persuading the Board of Regents. If anyone should make a statement it should be UCLA or Berkeley. Sorry to all UCSD students who may get offended but you guys only appear in the news when it’s an April Fool’s blunder ;)

UCSD… sigh…

That’s ridiculous. My god. Who does this? We have an economic crisis and instead of being a little more fiscally responsible, they want to make it even HARDER for people to further their education. I am really beginning to hate this state.

Money doesn’t come out of nowhere dude, they practically ARE being fiscally responsible by calling for schools to be shut down. They also already cut a bunch of stuff and added a bunch of fees, apparently it’s not enough.

ROFL babydragon

sooooooooo true :)

There whole reason for wanting to shut down those schools is that they don’t produce enough research. The people of California don’t pay for these schools to have an article printed in some journal, the pay money to provide an education to Californians.

ROLF ambyroy626 youre such a ******* loser dude i see that all youve done in previous posts ids rag on ucsd youre probably just jealous cuz you didnt make it into ucsd and now ya gotta hate on everyone who is more qualified than you
ya know what you can suck it and babydragon you can too =)

^ I agree.

I second that. UCSD is a great school. ambyroy626 and babydragon are probably among those people that didn’t get in, and now they are spreading nonsense about our school. how childish.

Touche! =]

the letter doesn’t even look legit, it on a blog site. and why would they close down those 3 school? thousands and thousands of student would be left out. dumbbbbbb.

i must say i agree with hanauma. if this was legit…wouldnt this be nation-wide news?..or at the very least california wide?. i havnt even heard of this…until i saw it on cc.

It is legit.
