I'm a junior, who took the Sat in May. I was very pleased with my score, but I'm afraid that colleges might find my 700 in writing alarming when next to my two 800s. I have the grammar down (I think I only missed one on the multiple choice) but I got a 6 on my essay. Do you think it would make a meaningful difference to admissions officers if I got the writing up to 750ish for my superscore?

For some background info, I'm looking at schools like Berkeley, UCLA (in state), Williams, The Ivies and UChicago. UW GPA 3.86 Cumulative | 4.1 Weighted Cumulative.
4.3 UC GPA. Okay ECs: 4 Years Varsity Golf, worked 700 hours in the last year (real estate related job). 100ish community service hours for a youth golf organization (First Tee)

Please excuse the poor spelling in the title

Uh no. Please don’t retake it. CR+M is much more important than the writing. Your writing score is already above the 90th percentile anyway. Now focus on your essays and other stuff on your application. College admissions is not all about test scores!

No, a 2300 is an excellent score, even by Ivy standards! At that point the schools you’re looking at consider a lot of wholistic factors (i.e. community service, leadership, application essays, EC’s etc.) The 6 on your essay can be easily disregarded by a 4 or 5 on an AP Lang or AP Lit exam. From an overall standpoint, you are well on your way to being a strong candidate for the schools you’re considering. Good Luck!

I got the same score (but actually kind of the opposite, 800 in writing and the lowest in CR), and I don’t think it’s worth retaking. If there is other meaningful stuff that you could do with your time, then I think you should do that instead. If you can write a great admissions essay, then colleges should not count your “bad” (though actually not bad) writing score against you. Getting an 800 in CR and math is super impressive, and some colleges don’t even consider the writing section, I’m pretty sure. On the 1600 scale, that’s a perfect score. So, congrats about that! If you really want to retake it, then do it, but I don’t think it’s worth the necessary time and money.

I agree that you shouldn’t retake the SAT. It would be a waste of your time and money since 2300 is already a great score. And like the other posts have noted, your writing score can be made up by an AP or IB test. The CR and Math sections are more important. Congrats on your score!

It’s a great score, especially with the two perfect sub scores. If you really wanted to, you could take an SAT II literature to boost your humanities credentials, but you’re fine.
