2380 vs. 2400

Yes, yes, I know this has been discussed many times. But as a relatively well-rounded applicant with pretty good EC's (not national level by any means, but local and unconventional), is it worth it to try to superscore to a 2400?

Math: 800, CR: 800, Writing: 780, subscore 80 e: 8
(maybe I tried too hard on my essay? I'm an opinion writer for my school newspaper, won writing awards locally, don't understand why I messed this one up)

First, there's the argument that it does nothing, as colleges know that it's just a different of a few questions.

Then, there's the argument that selective colleges can see that i retook it, so I'll just look like a try-hard.

But lastly, there's the CC argument that admission rates increase exponentially the closer you get to a perfect score.

Which one is right?

There is a CC student who retook with 2390 and he got 2400. He’s at Princeton. He was rejected elsewhere.

I don’t really think it’s worth it.

There is no statistical difference between a 2400 and a 2380. Retaking will only show that you, like most others, don’t understand that. The admin people do, so they won’t be as impressed as some of the bolks on CC. Anyway, you didn’t mess anything up, you just made a tiny mistake. Everyone does this. The ability to shrug it off (as it had no real effect on your life) and move on is much more important that achieving a “perfect” score that is not really perfect, as it is possible to score 800 on a given test form without getting all of the questions right.

You done real good! Enjoy your success and move on.

Thank god people like the above poster still exist…

I got a 2360 and did not even consider for a second to retake the SAT. It simply isn’t worth it and I would go as far as to say that admission officials frown upon it. Time would be better spent elsewhere.

Retaking would show that you’re a grade freak. I would recommend against retaking SAT unless you are 100% sure you will get full marks the second time. Lower graders may be counterproductive.

Yeah I got a 2370 and considered retaking since I knew the mistakes I made were stupid and that I should have done bettter…then I realized I was being kind of anal haha

2380 is great, congratulations (:

P.S. I went to a college admissions seminar and asked this question to the speaker; he said that they see anything over 2350 as pretty much equal to 2400. “If you don’t get in, it won’t be because you scored 2370 and not 2400 on the SAT”

Same as magentaturtle, got a 2360 and would never retake. Some might say go for the “prestige”, but I think that’s complete garbage. Colleges won’t react differently, so just stick with what you have.

thanks guys! made me feel tons better! (ugh the competition nowadays messes with your head. I swear I’m not normally a perfectionist!)
glad to see there are still nice people on CC

My daughter won a really nice award her junior year in high school. One of the other awardees had a 2390. When they introduced her, the guy announced her scores, and asked:“What happened?” It really broke the ice.
