I know they're division II, but my personal fave is the Delta State Fighting Okra:

The Fighting Okra! OMIGOD!!!

You can just see that okra sliming that little kid in the picture. :)

The question is, is there any such thing as a GOOD mascot costume?

The Yellow Jackets? The Owls? The Riptide? The Gators? The Commodores? The Demon Deacons? Unbelievably uninformed article.

Haha. Hawkette prob just doesn't like the article because it was likely written by a Michigan partisan...how dare anyone, especially from the northern "historic academic powers", criticize Hawkette's southern favorites...:D

UCB,
I'm on to them because the conspiracy is obvious and they threw in Harvard and Stanford just to try and look balanced. After launching a full investigation of their methodology, I think we ought to evaluate the PA scores of the schools that have been mentioned and see if this is more evidence of the academic elites spreading more nonsense and misinformation.

And given the source of the "study," I'm surprised that they didn't mention how scary the Rockets of the University of Toledo really, truly are....

I nominate Wisconsin's Bucky the Badger:
http://tarapfeifer.com/albums/stuff/Bucky.sized.jpg

and USC's Tommy Trojan and Traveler (actual human):
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_YeVVfegW8Vc/R2I8lqiBYvI/AAAAAAAAKFs/fpyGUt1AteA/IMG_3605.JPG

Hawkette,
You're entitled to your conspiracy theory thinking.

I thought the article was hilarious. It was making fun of the actual costumes, not the idea of the mascot itself, as Hanna pointed out.

As for "best dressed," there should be no doubt that UGA is the paws-down winner.

Features | Uga . . . The Book!

Note UGA IV's battle with Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket about halfway down the page as well as UGA V's tackle of an Auburn player a little further down the page. UGA V was a true pin-up star and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1997.

Yea, this was a great start, even if we could and will quibble over a Demon Deacon (talk about oxy-morons ...sorta like jumbo shrimp or...) and whether the banana slug merits top 10 consideration. I concur with the Ohio State buckeye being bad, and defined by Webster as "a hairless nut of little or no value." (Webster went to Penn State, you know.:cool:)

But I was disappointed that the jackass from Army wasn't there, or the brass-balled billy goat of Navy, or the Student Prince of Heidelberg (what the heck is a "STUDENT PRINCE" anyways?!) or the best of all ... the BIG RED TURKEY BUZZARD of Denison University! Now that's a critter that'll strike fear in the hearts of all Kenyon LORDS (you gotta be pretty self-important to name your mascot after God). Maybe the most appropo is Slippery Rock, where a great many alums have been referred to as such ...dumb as "THE ROCK."

btw, my wife'd best not read this one or I'm, well like Alabama ...Roll Tide roll, round the bowl, and down the hole ...

btw, much as I frown on the athletic antics of Florida State, is there a BETTER mascot than the Seminole on that horse, carrying a spear that's on fire?!

Yea, Tommy Trojan's close except you always gotta wonder if he's got any underwear on under his mini-skirt. No peeking ...

And the best "noise?"

Hands-down Penn State's NITTANY LION ROAR! Close 2nd ...Navy's horn, announcing the Mids' ship is coming in ...

No one has yet considered UC Irvine's Anteaters. Now that's weird.

I love Uga. (Of course, the real bulldog mascot lives in Connecticut....;) )

Well..some contributions from smaller schools:

F&M Diplomats (Lets go Dips...though we alum pefer Lets go Blue...)
Vassar Brewers...scaring prospective parents for years
Furman Purple Palidins ... nice ring but what is a Palidin
Tufts Jumbos
Conn. College Camels

Not sure if it is official but I always thought the Rock and Roll Royals of Scranton is a great nickname and their pep band was great 30 years ago.

It's the Furman Paladins (not purple Paladins). A Paladin is a Knight.

Now if you want something funny, back in the day they were called the

"Furman University Christian Knights".

Use the first letter of each word and see what you get :)

Ive always liked the chicken theme

University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens

University of South Carolina Gamecocks

The USC's mascot is named Cocky, which probably has created many, uh...variations?

Knox College has a pretty bad one, Prairie Fire.

Here's the Evergreen State College fight song:

The Geoduck Fight Song

words and music by Malcolm Stilson, 1971

Go, Geoducks go,
Through the mud and the sand,
let's go.
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.

Go, Geoducks go,
Stretch your necks when the tide
is low
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.
