also, about what length can supplemental essays be?

if you haven't noticed, i'm compiling all ideas here.

from robrym:

1. If you want to pursue Penn, then have your guidance counselor or regional rep or the person who interviewed you try to find out what/if anything put you into the deferred pile. This is the only thing you need to do now. If you learn something you can change, do so; if you can't, you can't...

2. Make sure all your other applications are very well done, reflect the best of you and your desire to go to all those other great schools on your list!

3. Write a letter to Penn (not this week, give it a rest) telling them you are still interested, and why. Include in that information something about any new acheivements, etc. Don't resend a full resume.

4. Ace your finals if you haven't already taken them. Send the excellent first semester grades to Penn, and your 3rd quarter grades when they come out if they are excellent too.

5. My son sent another recommendation. He had a senior year teacher who could not have written as personal a recommendation in October as he did in January...

6. My son also sent one of the essays he wrote for another school. It said something different about him that he had not been able to incorporate in his original Penn application.

I am really not sure how much else you can do. We were surprised this worked for my son. I don't think he had totally given up on Penn on the one hand, on the other hand he knew he kind of had to in order to get the other applications in good shape (none were done when the ED decision came out). A year earlier his older brother had been rejected at his ED school. Both of them did great in the RD round, and both are happy where they are, but would have been happy at many places in fact. Remember how confident you felt before all this started, and try to make sure that you reflect that in every thing you write hereon out. All will be fine. Good luck.

keep this alive....maybe some more information after school (half-day! whoo!)

I emailed My reps yesterday, she responded to me in one day. I asked about my application and why I was deferred, she simply said for me to call her to discuss my application. Has anyone else had any luck with their rep discussin specifics about their app? Especially any students at Penn or alums?

I just wanted to add my two cents here.

Please read Robyrm's post. Then read it again. Above all make sure you put your heart and soul into your other applications. Add some more match & safety schools to your list if you feel you don't have enough already. Only then, should you pursue deferral reversal. Keep in mind that if Penn was a reach before, it's now a super reach. Don't count on getting in RD. If you do, great, but if you don't, I'm sure you will be happy and successful elsewhere.

jhum111, I'm hesitant to call my regional director or even the admissions office right now. I've gotten mixed opinions about what to do to help my chances in the RD round after being deferred, but can you keep us updated on what happens between you and your rep.? Thanks

Well Catalina Guzman, which i just got off the phone with, was totally awesome, thats all i'll say, she told me EXACTLY what to do, she recalled my app from memory

Wow! jhum111, I'm really glad to hear such news! It kinda gives us all some hope, unless you're a special exception because you were really on the boarder between the deferral and acceptance. I hope all of the reps. are that nice. jhum111, did she comment on any other information about the ED round (any type of increase in deferred applicants, how many were accepted, etc.)? Also, how feasible do you think it is to change that specific part of your application in order to get the fat envelope in April? For example, do they expect you to rack up hundreds of awards, etc.? Will you be re-writing your essay? Do you suppose I should contact my regional representative? Thanks man!

P.S.- How did you ask about the weakness in your application? I asked my GC what I should ask exactly, and she told me to ask about what I should improve rather than ask my regional director to reveal what my weakness was.

She really helped me out, she really knew my app in and out, she discussed many details with me from my essays to recs to ECs and deferral reversal techniques. I don't want to give away the specific advice, but i would definitely advise you to contact your rep.

PS she told me that SATs really mean squat, i expressed that i thought the only reason i was deferred was b/c of my SATs (1800), she said to take it again if i wanted to, it was no biggie

Reply to your PS
I just asked what my app was lacking and why i was deferred, thats all, i presented my self very confidently and forthright

hmm... i wish i had my reps email, i guess i'll make a call on monday

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: After ED decisions came out and I found out of my deferral, I discovered this new found respect for college admissions, Penn especially. There are so many people telling me that numbers, numbers, numbers are the sole thing that Penn is looking for (which may be true for the uber prestigious programs), but now that I see who has gotten in and who hasn't, I can see it now. The 3 that were admitted from my school absolutely deserved it, and I'm not saying they were the only ones, but Penn did an excellent job of picking out the most dedicated candidates. Kudos to Penn on that.

I will rework my essays and hopefully bring a stronger case to the table. I'll be calling my rep. tomorrow, and hopefully he is as nice as Catalina Guzman.

By the way, did you say anything like "Penn is still my number one" (not literally saying those exact words but some sort of variation), or is that already understood when an applicant keeps the interest up, etc. I can never figure out whether these adcoms can read between the lines or not!

Thanks!!

maybe don't call tomorrow, it's saturday

Why do you advise against calling tomorrow? I know I have plenty of time to make any changes, but I still want to know what to expect!

Lol, you applied ED, Penn has to be your #1, but repeating that won't hurt :) Call ASAP because holidays are approaching and people are leaving. I would call Saturday

jhum, why can't you share the defferal techniques she told you?

i thought this thread was all about sharing the best ways to get defferal changed to acceptance

because they may differ between regional reps, i don't want to tell you something that yours might think different, your rep will be presenting your app, so unless you are from FL, puerto rico or the US virgin islands, ask your respective rep for deferral techniques.

ok fair enough, but maybe you can answer this for me. When you called the admissions office and they picked up, what did you say? My admissions officer said to call the office and tell her assisstant my name and she'll pull my app and my admissions lady would call me back. When I call, I have no idea who I'll be talking to or what to say.

i sent her an email on the 15th, she responded on the 16th by telling me to call her to discuss my app, she gave me her direct line and I called and I got voicemail, so i left a message, she called back in 5 minutes and we talked. So she called me, and i actually forgot to leave my name on the message yet she recalled my app from memory, so i was soooo happy, and then had it sitting on her desk after she began looking for it.

wow that sounds like some kick ass news jhum

i know. lucky bugger.

must be the red hair.

i just hope my GC comes into school someday before break so he can call my rep :l

btw, did i mention that my counselour is the spitting image of a young old bob dylan?
