28 January Critical Reading

I omitted about 6 total, but feel very confident on the rest. Is there any way I can score above a 700 with this (assuming most besides those 6 are correct)?

Ok, on my first SAT I, I missed six (didn't omit) and lost a total of 7 raw score points. I got a 730. Assuming you didn't miss any other questions, you should be good to go for a 700+, depending upon the curve.

I left 6 blank and got 1 wrong in November and got a 670...

in march i got 10 wrong and omitted none and got a 670

i think i ommited like 20 LOL

11blank in December = 690

7 wrong = 700 in november

Why the heck would you leave so many questions blank? Even if you eliminate ONE answer, probability is on your side. And even if you take a compete guess, statistically, it should not hurt nor help your score (of course you could get unlucky).

unlucky is exactly the problem... see if you eliminate atleast 1 answer choice, then it does decrease ur chance of getting it wrong..BUT YOU CAN STILL GET IT WRONG

I was always taught to NEVER guess, but now I am thinking...

if i omit, i lose 1 point
if i get it wrong, i lose .25 of a point

could someone remind me why it is so great to not guess?

i'm an idiot, i thought i had finished the section but i still had 4 questions to answer and the time was about to end, i could only answer one, in total i left three without answer, and i feel ok about the others, but i'll guess i most have at least 4 wrongs...

dude wheres your math??!! if you get a question wrong then you will lose 1+0.25=1.25 marks!!

Ummm.. isn't it 1*0.25=0.25, meaning you lose only 0.25 points?

So far I've encountered:
Old sat, 6 wrong, 750
June? sat, 4 wromg, 740
December SAT, 9 wrong, 690

I was always taught to NEVER guess, but now I am thinking...

if i omit, i lose 1 point
if i get it wrong, i lose .25 of a point

could someone remind me why it is so great to not guess?

IT IS 1.25 IF IT IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guessing is honestly not that bad, in my opinion anyway. Say I'm doing critical reading. There are two questions I don't get. If I omit, I lose two raw points. So, if the raw total is 80, I would now have 78 raw. Now, let's say I guess on those two, AND get them wrong. Then, I have lost two raw, and I've also lost 2 * .25 = .50. So, my raw for guessing wrong on two is 77.5, which rounds up to 78. Thus omitting two and guessing on two have given me the exact same score, and we're not even factoring in the probability that I guess correctly. Naturally you start to lose some points for a lot of guesses, but it's more than made up for by the potential points you gain for correct guesses.

hehe its quite funny that 2 ppl have the same confusion.....when we guess and we get it wrong we firstly lose 1 mark because our answer wasn't right and then a kind of a penalty of .25 marks....which comes up to 1.25 marks....

@the.end i was pretty inclined to guessing when i gave my sat the first time but i ended up losing a lot of points....therefore i made it a habit to NOT to guess until i was left with 2 choices...and the little story you told is the positive side of guessing....consider this....you guess 3 questions and get all of them wrong....so that will be 3 marks plus the negative marking of 3*0.25 marks....so the total will be 3.75 which will be rounded off to 4 marks getting cut from your raw score...

the content of the 3 sections (Critical Reading) in January's SAT is exactly

THE SAME

with the June's SAT (2005). (3 reading sections)

My friend has told me so!

Oh, my God! College Board.

Have any of you noticed that?

The writing (10-minute section) is also the same, too.

My friend did not remember the rest, but maybe they are the same too.

PS: If you have 1 question right, you earn 1.25 points. If you get wrong, you lose 1.5 points.

caythong,I don't think that's wrong.Do the CR sections include a passage on extraterrestrial intelligences and a passage on a girl's narration? That's all I can remember of the June SAT that I took.

Yes, in fact, they do--I think.

At least, I am very sure that there were two passages on extraterrestrial intelligences... and vaguely remember a girl's narration....

In fact, I'm very sure that there was a girl's narration in the January SAT....
