Hi I am new here and have a question. My son is doing good and is going to take SSAT in Nov. I am curious to know what kind of school will accept my son if he's got 2Bs, 4As and has a 80% percentile. We are interested in Loomis, Westminster, Berkshire, NMH, Books, Pomfret.

I’d think that he would be a strong candidate for all of those schools as a full paying student and still competitive even if requesting FA. Of course, if he is particularly good at a sport, that might help out as well.

I would also look at Kent and a few of the boys schools as well. Kent and Salisbury are both on the way-ish between Loomis and Berkshire.

Best of luck!

Remember that what is normal for this website (95+ ssat and all A’s) is not normal for the rest of the world!

neatoburrito,
Thanks for the comments, we are not going for the FA and yes, most of the kids here are just great with the grades and SSAT. I browsed here once a while and always wondering Why? Is this forum the highest standard of Prep admission?

Definitely consider Berkshire if your son is interested in math and science. Have you looked at Governor’s, Worcester, and Nobles and Greenough? Nobles is known for their strong athletics, so if your son is an athlete that might be a good fit.

I think you have a combination of things; kids motivated enough about their own education to do independent research and post online tend to be very bright and parents of extremely bright kids who have no local options.

Remember that an 80%tile on the ssat (assuming it’s the independent school percentile and not the “national” percentile) is a VERY good score. And a a few B’s won’t kill an app, especially if he attends a challenging private school.

If you think your son is the type who would like a really intense atmosphere, you may even consider adding some more selective schools to his list. Why not check out Choate, Hotchkiss and Taft while you’re in CT?

He is attending a challenging private junior school now. Son is very motivated, bright, focused and independent. We don’t want him to be at a relaxed atmosphere, we want him to be with peers with ambitious, goals while know how to survive painful but happy. Like work hard and play hard kind of things. We visited Hotchkiss, Concord, Taft, Choate. really love Choate, Taft and Hotchkiss but is lack of confidence because of the grades, do you think he has chance to go to these top schools?

doubleohseven, son is very good at Math and science and we are impressed by the program of Berkshire, the only concern is the location is remotely. We visited Governor’s and the facilities are ok but the admission people are very friendly and helpful. Westminster has the best updated classroom, math and science building, very impressed and very friendly admission officials.

fun is fun, thank you for the info

A very motivated, bright, focused and independent boy from a challenging private junior school should do very well with the grades and SSAT score you cite, at any of the boarding schools. The secondary school placement officers at your junior school can give you much better guidance than the posters on this board. They should have a better feeling for how your son’s grades compare to recent graduates’ admissions outcomes.

Don’t assume that the grades and scores posters claim on this board are 1) true, or 2) typical. Grades also vary in significance by school. So, I think your son sounds like a strong candidate. Don’t get discouraged by anonymous boasts.

Thank you periwinkle, we sure will work very closely with the placement office at son’s school, just want to gather more insight feel about those schools so we can make right decision. One thing for sure, we will not send applications to those top 5 schools, I don’t think we need to be there to success in life.

Your son would have a really good shot at St. Mark’s or Brooks.

When did your son take the SSAT? He will have to take it again this year sometime from October through January. This will give him a chance to improve, although he shouldn’t feel obligated to since 80% is a great score.

He is taking SSAT again in Nov.

I’d like to go off topic, here with a bit of online safety: The original poster’s screen name looks like it could be a real student’s real name. Probably safest to avoid a screen name that has any actual-sounding name, even if the name is made up. You just never know who’s watching these posts.

agree, can I delete this thread?

@jeffchang,
It depends on your son’s SSAT score. Seeing as he’s in a challenging private school he probably has the grades for any school. It depends on his SSAT score. 4 A’s and 2B’s with an 80% SSAT is much different than 4 A’s and 2 B’s with a 90% SSAT. If he gets a 90% then go for top tier schools. (Andover,Exeter,SPS,Deerfield, etc) If he gets an 80% then you should consider places like Concord,Loomis, Westminster, Berkshire, NMH, Books, Pomfret, and Governor’s. If he gets a mid 80s score then go for a mixture. Good luck!
