My son scored a 96 percentile on the November 2012 SSAT. 99 in Verbal, 99 in Math sections, 77 in Reading section. We are applying to private schools (Grade 6) for him. What are his chances based on these scores? He has a strong academic record and plays varsity and club level soccer. He has done really well on International Olympiads and on the SSAT got all Math questions right (40/40). Should I worry about the 77 percentile in the reading section?

He will do just fine. pick a few top schools and apply there. If he doesnt get in, he will go to his local HS and excel which looks better then going to a low tier prep school. Pick 3-5 and he will most likely get into a few.

I have experience with schools in CT. I’d stay away from them. look at schools like st. pauls, milton, and groton.

Then of course Andover Exexter, Deerfield, Choate, Taft, Hotchkiss are at the top.

I’m a bit confused OP. Is your son currently in the 5th or 6th grade ?

@yankessarebad: Curious about your Connecticutt boarding school impressions. Are you willing to share a bit more ?

OP: I assume that you’re just applying to private day schools since your son is just entering the sixth grade. No, there is no need to worry about the 77% grade when the composite score is above 90%.

@Yankee & Axel,

The OP posted this thread for his/her son the same time OP posted a thread for his/her daughter:

So I don’t think “local school” is going to be an option for this family.

It depends on the school, obviously. Being expats may be a “hook” on the other hand.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Local school is an option as company may move me back next summer.
