Hey everyone! My question is whether anyone thinks that it is a good idea to pursue a 2nd graduate degree. I am midway through my degree focusing on general administration with Central Michigan and should be finished by next summer. I work in healthcare and have 5 years experience in the field.

I am leaving the Army next year and would like to apply to an MHA program to start in the fall of next year. Does this seem like overkill and if so what could be viable options instead of going this route?

I would be trying to get into a fairly decent program, hopefully top 25-30. My GI Bill should pay for the majority, so money is not an issue. Any suggestions or comments are welcome and I appreciate the feedback!

Anybody? I would just like to hear some outside opinions no matter how cruel and harsh or some constructive criticism.

Thanks.

So you’re doing an MS in administration? No, I don’t think you should get a 2nd graduate degree specifically in healthcare administration. There are lots of people with MPAs and MBAs doing healthcare administration who had no specific concentration in it in their graduate programs; you learn some things on the job. You could see if some nearby programs offer non-degree courses, but I don’t think you should have to get another graduate degree. You already have 5 years of experience in healthcare; that should suffice.

Hey thanks for the reply Julliet. I am thinking on those lines as well. I’ve been a professional student for quite some time and I get caught up in the value of education and with the way the economy is I get worried that what I’ve done may not be enough! Plus, I’ll have spent 6 years in the Army and I feel like I need to use my GI Bill when I get out because I earned it, but I don’t really know what to do with it.

I was thinking if I could find some helpful post-bacc certificates or something that would be desirable as well. Who knows? I’m just trying to bat some ideas around for my upcoming transition and I know now is the time for applying to programs and didn’t want to miss any opportunities.

Thanks again!
