I recently registered for a winter class that runs from 6:30-9:50 every Wednesday night. It's the second part of a French sequence, and it's with the same professor I have now. I was originally in a daytime MWF course, but I switched to this one to stay with the same instructor. I'm preparing (hopefully) to study abroad in France next year, and since I've already bonded with my professor and since she's been helping me plan and organize my study abroad application, I feel like it'd be beneficial to have her again, even in a late, long class.

The only thing is that I have 3 other classes earlier on Wednesdays, so it'd be pretty draining.

Do you think I'm making a good decision? Or am I just being rash and childish by wanting a familiar comfort?

That sounds like a terrible time, I don’t care if your professor is the loveliest person on Earth. If this professor is organizing your trip, chances are you’ll see them plenty of times outside of class at a time when the two of you won’t be zombies.

Do you have time for an afternoon nap, if the day would otherwise be too long? If you don’t have any early-morning classes either Wednesday or Thursday, I think it would be fine, unless you’re normally in bed by 10 every night.

I personally liked night classes, although part of that is my experience that they often let out early. I’d also take the known good professor over the unknown.

As long as there’s a gap between your earlier classes and your night class, it should be fine. I had a 7-10 PM lab one time, and it wasn’t bad at all. I had a good five hour gap between my earlier classes and my lab, so it didn’t even feel like a “long” day. Also, it’s only once a week, and since it seems like you’re on the quarter system you’ll only have to deal with it ~10 times. Even less if you’re talking about the winter session of a semester school.

I am a huge believer in going with the best professor. Previously known good professor is a stress reducer and a time saver, you know their styles and how their classes and tests work.
As the other poster mention the session will go fast enough, take a power nap, grab a cup of coffee before class. It is not like you would already be in bed at this time of night. You will also save time not having to find a special time to see someone with questions about your trip to France.

I’m doing the same thing now. Sure, it’s draining but i prefer it this way. You can take an energy drink or something, but there’s no reason at all you can’t manage it. If going MWF means an extra trip to campus, I would definitely avoid that. I much prefer having Friday off and the relief once that long day is over. Night classes are also laid back by comparison.

Unless you go to bed super early, 9:50 isn’t too bad. My 6-9 Thursday lab freshman year was ok, I had 3.5 hours of class earlier in the day.

The problem I think I would have is trying to learn all the material at once, three lectures in a row on the same material will be rough if it’s a class you find hard/boring.

It’s not a bad decision at all. If you go through the term and hate it, then you learned that you hate long night classes.

Right now as a first year, I have a 7-10 PM lab with four classes the same day. It sucks, but is still doable- I just have one hellish day, which makes the rest of my week seem much easier.

Thanks, everyone! I think that I am going to stick with it. I don’t have classes on Thursdays, and I have a gap from 2:30 to the night class on Wednesdays, so that will hopefully make things better.

Also, since it’s a foreign language, I think it’s prudent to practice it every day. Would it be a good idea to try and spread out all my homework throughout the week? I know it’s easier said than done, but you have to do that with a once-a-week class, right?
