3.2 GPA, late bloomer, HIGH SAT score, top university?

wipes tear
puts hand over heart

that was a touching piece of advice and I will obey it, thank you.

I already applied to Yale and friday I am sending in my application for UVA.

Next up

Beloit

Received SAT score today, made a 2190.

CC generally exaggerates the difficulty of getting into good, but not Ivy caliber, schools, and tends to accurately assess the difficulty of getting into Ivies and other institutions.

For example, it’s total bull crap that getting into UVa from OOS is like getting into an Ivy.

But it’s not total crap that it’s still a reach for you.

Go to princetonreview.com to find average SAT and GPAs for admits of the colleges you’re interested in (but don’t use their “fit” calculator as it’s glitchy and not correct, just read the stats provided). If you can’t find the info there, go to the college’s own website or call the admissions office, because they will have tracked the info and can tell you this. Assume these averages will be brought slightly down by athletes, people with extreme talent in some area (such as music or art), or URMs. Therefore you are only a “match” for these schools if you are above the average stats for an admit in all categories (SAT, GPA) - not MASSIVELY above, then it’s a safety, but safely above will make sure that the averages being brought down by the athletes/URMs/music or art talents etc. don’t apply to you.

Now, were the parents right or not? You see for yourself.

Now it’s called a “chance” thread because no one can no for SURE how your HS is seen by adcoms (maybe a 3.2 at your HS is like a 3.8 anywhere else, who knows), no one can know what your essays or recs look like or what kind of ECs the colleges you’re applying to are looking for this year to shape their class. But you knew that posting here, that they could only give you info based on your raw numbers and the raw averages provided by universities. Really, that’s what most people do, and it usually is fairly accurate.

OP, congrats on your SAT scores. It is an achievement, especially considering the short time span between the tests. Well done!

Thanks, oh and a congressman I worked for as a volunteer, he finished my recommendation letter of Yale University and I sent it in =D

3.2 = HOPE GPA

3.5 = Overall GPA

Congrats on the SAT scores! Good job.

I can’t tell if you are serious. You have no shot at Yale or Harvard. You have very little shot at Cornell, UVA, Emory or UNC either. You should consider BC a reach but there is a chance that would justify an application. I think you have a decent chance at NYU depending on your major. You need to be realistic.

Now I just saw your updated SAT score. I would say that you will get into BC and NYU. still not going to get into Yale or Harvard but you have a reasonable shot at the others. Test scores (SAT and ACT) are the most important thing. GPA is important but is secondary to test scores.

I think you should do whatever you want, and I wish you the best. However, you have one of the nastiest attitudes I have ever seen. A lot of people here are extremely helpful–parents, college students, fellow applicants, etc.

Coming in late to this convo, and this was the first thing I noticed, so I apologize if it’s already been pointed out. But a 3.2/3.3 is NOT acceptable at UVA (I visited, applied and was admitted). The admissions officer that gave the presentation specifically stated, “we value GPA more than SAT; we would much rather see what a student did with 4 years worth of work, than 4 hours.”

Sorry if you were misinformed, but unless you have some crazy ECs and write phenomenal essays, I don’t see an average SAT making the cut for you. Good luck though, I do wish you the best.

Just to let the recent posters know, I think the OP has pretty much made up his mind where he is going to apply. Any further beating of this horse is probably just going to lead to some nasty exchanges.

Bovertine got it. I am not getting into this crap again, I applied to Yale and I am confident I will get in.

I am leaving it at that and if you guys want to rabble on and on then go on, no one on this site is going to determine whether or not I get since none of you actually work for Yale ^_^.

88% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher

8% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74

2% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49

1% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24

1% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

guess you had a point with that, I kinda regret applying to UVA, I just wanted to go to Virginia for college but it was a bad decision. BTW my GPA is a 3.5 overall.

Plus the out of state tuition is a bish!

Oh no I have a nasty attitude around a bunch of pessimistic people, I am not getting anywhere in life =(.

People, we already know there is no point arguing here. It will all get sorted out by April 1st. Either the OP will be surprised at that point or the people trying to help will be.

Good point, coureur. Another consideration is that the assumption that the OP made about posters here not working for Yale could just be wrong, for all he knows. One should not make assumptions like that around here. For example, my cousin was on the Yale Med school admissions committee, and was a biology professor there for many, many years. It wouldnt be that hard to match up some posters stats and info, should someone wish to do that.

And OP, I totally agree that there is no point in reopening this can of rotting worms. But remember, posters here read many of the threads, and if you are going to go on other threads and refer to the posters and parents here as “pricks”, disgruntled parents and posters who post fake profiles and overinflate their stats, don’t be surprised when people suggest that you need an attitude adjustment. Posters stats are no less or more believable than the suggestion that you “really didn’t care” about the writing section when you got a 640. Please consider a little more humility and a little less attitude.

Okay, there is no way someone who works at Yale admissions is going to waste their time gossiping with a bunch of disgruntled parents who have self esteem issues and feel the need to be pessimistic towards others because their kids did not make anything of themselves.

As for the last part, you are just looking for an argument. I won’t respond since I already have made something out of a rough situation, if you are obsessed with me and feel the need to stalk me section to section then do so. I will enjoy my Christmas Break and you can have fun rotting your life away on this site, as if you ever had one to begin with.

OOOO BOOOYYY better leave before jym gets his confederate KKK buddies on me!

So that’s why the people on yahoo answers were complaining about this site. Looks like this article was right about the site after all

[Urban Dictionary: College Confidential](Urban Dictionary: College Confidential)

…Ummm.

That’s all I have to say to this.

Naaa its not all the sections, heck its not even this section really. It’s just a bunch of pricks who get ****ed easily because they never got into a good college themselves so they want to discourage everyone else from even applying. I stick with other sites and now I have real people to go to. Although I have seen that the transfer section is not so bad, the SAT section has some helpful people too. Oh well I better leave.

HEY aren’t you that guy who made the SAT thread?
