3.6 GPA with a high trend and 35 Math, 33 English, 34 Reading and 34 Science. Been wanting to major in Chem or Bio for med school with a minor in Economics/Political Science etc. Indiana resident.
Been considering Notre Dame, U Chicago and Richmond for great financial aid, with Lousiana Tech and Alabama as my scholarship safeties.
Cannot afford/not willing to pay for in-state public school
Great declaration. Do you have a question?
Are you asking for more schools that provide nearly full scholarships and generous financial aid?
Advice, comments and other colleges to look for are welcome.
You seem to be set with the likes of Alabama and Richmond on your list. Those are a couple of solid choices. You might want to toss in a STEM school because such schools are trying hard ($$$) to attract additional female applicants: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Case Western Reserve University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Rennsalaer Polytechnic Institute, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (the Chemistry department there is very rigorous). Two somewhat overlooked colleges I like with good science departments are Ohio Wesleyan University and U of Tulsa. Wesleyan College in Georgia is a very good woman’s college that has worked hard to keep college affordable. Consider also a couple of Midwestern small college favorites…Beloit College, St. Olaf College. An excellent cardiologist I know is a St. Olaf alumnus.
The following schools may fully meet your need for financial aid, but admissions is VERY competitive:
Princeton U
Smith College (women)
U of Virginia
@LakeWashington why are you assuming the OP is a female?
Because of the screen name. Although Gay Tralese is male. Or it could be my smudged eyeglasses or the 2 in the afternoon hunger pangs. LOL.
I am a male of the white variety.
The name comes from Gay-Lussac’s law which is known existentially as the pressure and temperature of a gas are in a direct relationship.
Are you going to visit Alabama? My son was premed there. Loved his experience.
You should plan a visit.
How was your PSAT? Are you a likely NMF? If so, then you’d get a bigger award.
Are you low income?
How much can your family pay each year?

Is the 3.6 GPA your weighted GPA? Does that include all classes?
If you visit Bama, please set up your campus tour AND contact the Honors College and ask them to set up your day. Ask if you can meet with Dr. Sharpe to discuss the CBHP program…great for premeds and research opps. Also ask him about the Emerging Scholars program which gets frosh hooked up with research from the first year.
@mom2collegekids I did take the PSAT but my score was in the low 100’s. English is my academic Achilles heel so I fell flat. My parents have said they’ll pay 2-3 thousand a year. 3.6 is unweighted, STEM lifts me up and English pulls me down.
If your parents are only willing to come up with $2-3K you should be looking for full rides (Room and Board generally costs ~10K/year). Even Tulane and Bama are going to cost you more than that.
What is your weighted GPA?
How much can you earn/save over the summer?
How will you cover the school expenses beyond Tuition?
@“Erin’s Dad” This is why Alabama probably will most likely not be my final selection. I’m low enough income that full-meet schools would cover enough so that the $2-3K would be good enough to pay for most of it. I think if push comes to shove, my parents may be willing to up their limit.
@mom2collegekids
A) Weighted GPA is not published on my transcript, but my last one was in the ~5.4 range. I took a lot of senior level social science classes as a freshman that were easy peezy so that number is over inflated (a D in there would be weighted as an A because I was 3 years below) so my A was a 7.0 for weighted. But it’s not published on the transcript so no harm no foul I guess.
B) I live WAY out in the country, so any job in the city would have to pay me big bucks to make up for gas/car fees. Farm jobs aren’t available either, at least paid. The best I could do is work on a farm and learn “life lessons” about the value of hard work and hope an adcom at a full meet school eats it up.
C) My Achilles heel strikes again! My parents have little money laying around as do I. Relying on loans that probably won’t even meet what I need it to do isn’t my thing, so Alabama will probably be my last resort all things gone bad my life is a lie kind of thing.
My main strategy is shoot for full-meet schools and hope my shotgun strikes gold. Beggars (or middle-class kids) cannot be choosers.
Well, since your WGPA will not be on your transcript, you need to target full need schools that look for upward trend.
A straight 3.6 GPA could really hurt you at some schools.
What is your composite ACT for one sitting?
Also consider Loyola Maryland. I believe it meets need (or did at one time).
Run the NPC on Depauw’s website and see what the results are.
Hopefully some here can recommend some LACs that give lots of aid that need more males.
Also, apply to Rhodes College.
How low of an income? less than $40k per year?
Do your parents own land or a farm or a business?

virtually all the “full need” schools will have a student summer contribution…meaning that they’ll expect you to earn a few thousand every summer to put towards college. This is in addition to the parent contribution. How will you cover that?
@mom2collegekids
A) My highest single sitting scores are what is listed above, my highest score for all four sections is from the one sitting. That would be 34 Composite, 35 Math, 33 English, 34 Reading and 34 Science.
B) When it comes to social settings, I am not a “party” kind of person. I’m pretty moderate when it comes to social settings, but I am skeptical will ever even go to party. I’m a teetotaler so I’d like to avoid schools where drinking and/or drug culture is prevalent. On that note, I saw DePauw was huge when it comes to fraternities so I don’t think it’s quite my cup of tea.
No, we’re at ~75k per year. We don’t own any farms or businesses. For the summer earnings covering, I guess I won’t. There’s no way for me to do so unless a neighbor needs a full-time butler or something.
With that income your EFC will be greater than the $2-3K your parents would like to pay, even at a school that meets need.
