Hey Guys,

I just found out my unweighed gpa and its 3.7. My weighed is 3.92. Is this okay for the colleges I am applying too?:

UT Austin
Southern Methodist University
Texas A&M
Fordham U
American U
George Washington U
Syracuse U
Boston U

Chill out. a 3.7 is FINE!!! You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Are you instate for UT and are you in the top 8 percent???

yes I am a instate texas resident… top 5% percent of my class… so yeah guaranteed acceptance for a&m and UT… I have 31 ACT and solid and a few impressive ec’s/leaderships… fair amount of awards/honors as well… hopefully it will make up for the loss in gpa…

You will be fine spt.leonidas. how steep was this drop???

Thankss… we use the 100 scale so I went from a 98.4 to a 97.7… I made a C+ one semeseter in AP Statistics unfortunately and that is why it brought me down

A 3.7 unweighted and 3.92 weighted GPA is very detrimental in some circumstances but it is not in most of the universities of your interest. You should find more “reach” schools.

How can a 97.7 be a 3.7 gpa?

Dont worry. GPA is important, but so are other things you did. You GPA is not that bad.

@Sentiment: What circumstances would those be? Applying to like competitive schools? As for more “reach” schools I have been looking into UVA and Georgetown because of their treatment to first generation college students like me (mother never finished high school/father never finished college)… I know UVA has like a 4.0 gpa requirement… would that be under weighted or unweighted?

@Sylvan8798: Thats what my counselor told me and its on the computer record so I guess whatever they say is solid

@Fly2theSky: Thanks for the vote of confidence… freshman year was a bumpy year as usual I think that C in one semester and my performance in freshman year (4 B’s and 4 A’s - We had 8 classes) caused it… I hope they really understand…

Do you know if you can afford all these schools?

how much will your parents pay each year for college? If the amount that they will pay is less than the total cost of TAMU or UT, then you need a couple of financial safety schools.

I should be able to afford most… I am in the running for a full ride to SMU, I will get some aid for UT since my brother goes there, I am eligible for the Gold Scholarship at TAMU practically a full ride… they said they will be able to pay 45% to 50% of the fees and take the rest on a loan if needed… the only school they are we are worried about is George Washington University… total fees would come roughly around 55,000 dollars… but they are kinda notorious for giving an good financial aid package on average… so hopefully I will get some aid since I am a first generation college student and income cap is less than 100,000 dollars

*I am in the running for a full ride to SMU,

I will get some aid for UT since my brother goes there,

I am eligible for the Gold Scholarship at TAMU practically a full ride…*

???

What is the Gold Scholarship at TAMU that is practically a full ride? Could you provide a link?

What is your brother’s EFC?

Are you talking about the Presidential scholarship at SMU? I only see a full tuition/fees scholarship…not a full ride (a full ride covers tuition, fees, room, board, books).

Since an ACT 31 is at the 25% point at SMU, that doesn’t sound like “in the running” for this top scholarship. Or am I missing something.

I think you need to apply somewhere that you are ASSURED to get a big scholarship…not maybe.

SMU: [Where to start - President’s Scholars - SMU/url… if not that i am pretty sure I can snag the Hunt Leadership Scholarship since I founded a couple of clubs and hold a few good leadership positions (captain of soccer team, student council body treasurer)… Link here: https://scholarships.tamu.edu/tamu_scholarships/freshman/regents.aspx](http://smu.edu/ps/Where_to_start.asp) (not full ride)

TAMU scholarship is now called Honors Scholarship not Gold (sorry for confusion in booklet it says gold for some reason – its not on the website but in the informational booklet its apparently tuition, room/board, and books not other fees)

My parents pay 15,000 for my brother’s tuition (He received a 3k scholarship a year for merit)

A 97.7 would be much higher than a 3.7. You need to look at your GPA by class. Here is one example of a conversion factor which bases an A on a 95%. [WikiAnswers - How do you convert percentage GPA to 4.0 scale](<a href=“Answers - The Most Trusted Place for Answering Life's Questions”>How do you convert percentage GPA to 4.0 scale? - Answers) That being said, as long as you are willing to attend TAMU (and it sounds like a safety for admission) then feel free to apply where ever you like. It looks like you should get into most/all of them.

^^ 97.7 is my weighted gpa on the 100 scale… my unweighted gpa on the 100 scale is 92.7 so it should come around 9.72 or so…

You should definitely look at adding some reachers, with your numbers you will most likely get into every school on that list. Just a suggestion, you might want to check out Emory which has a lot of texas residents who attend, has great financial aid, and is a top 20 school. It also has an amazing business school and is well-known for its pre-med program. It is definitely a reach though, but you never know…

You should add Vandy (vanderbilt) … MattLeinartFan’s suggestion is also great as well

^^ thanks for the suggestions guys! I will definitely look into them?
