3.9 v. 4.0

I mainly asking this question to put off studying for finals.

But anyway, I have been very luck (and hardworking) in my High School career and up till this point I have recieved a 4.0 GPA for all 2 and a half years of High School. This year however, I strongly believe that I will recieve a B in a History Elective (not a CP class) that I am taking this year. I will most likey recieve an A in all of my other 5 classes.

Essentially, on the transcript my High School sends out, it will say I have a 3.9 (unless they round because I think it comes out to being a 3.977). However, I also know that most colleges recalculate GPA's and only use the CP and AP classes that you take as classes that factor into your GPA.

So my two questions are, will it matter at all? and if it does, do colleges see a difference between a 3.97 and a 4.0?

Oh, this all unweighted by the way, my HS doesn't weight.

You won't get the benefit of being perfect but you're never, ever going to be rejected because some other dude had a 4.0. A 3.9 and a 4.0 are easily comparable and admissions would look deeper to make their decision.

I think there is a difference. Saying a 3.9 = 4.0 is like saying a 2390 = 2400. There is a small but indeniable difference. I don't think it will make or break you though.

Yeah, there's a difference, but it's negligable.

I think it makes a slight difference though. At my school, we have 8 kids with a 4.0 UW and 20+ kids with a 3.9 UW.

Yeah, pretty much what I figured. My school doesn't rank either so it won't affect that.

By the way Murasaki, my post is very different from the one you linked to. Namely in that I acknowledge a 3.9 as being good. Also, his is weighted.

Anyway, thanks. Gotta get back to the books.

I'm not saying your post is similar, I'm just trying to provide you with more information regarding what people think of 3.9 vs. 4.0.

what classes you took count too

The difference is not "indeniable." Realistically, if you have a 3.9 and a 2390 instead of a 4.0 and 2400, you do not have "less of a chance" at getting in assuming that all your other qualities are the same.

You will be fine.

No big deal

Pretty much what I figured.

I guess I won't study anymore.

Sooooo kidding.

in all honesty, a 3.9 looks more appealing to my eyes than does a 4.0. whereas a 4.0 may depict a "perfect" student, a 3.9 may show that the student is well rounded- not entirely focused on his schoolworks, but other activities as well.
^may not make sense but all in all, a 3.9 look much better to me than a 4.0

That's because you assume that the 4.0 kid has no extracurriculars/no life beyond academics. I guess its just a jealousy/bias factor that we all have. (at least I do). I'll admit it, the kids that get 2300+ and a a flawless GPA and amazing extracurrics.....damn

Ahhh, that's where we factor in that I do have a life and some good ECs.

you will not get into college with a 3.9. have you thought about construction?

Yeah pirt, comments like that are only funny for people who are like "ahhh no! I got a B!"

I'll admit its slightly humorous that I ask this question as one B isn't a bad thing. But really, I'm using CC today as a way to give me a break from studying. So any post I make today can just be held at the fact that I'm only posting because I don't want to be doing work.

That includes this post.

Quick question- does 3.9=99 while 4.0=100? My school doesn't use the traditional 4.0 system, sorry.

How about a 3.85 - is there that big of a difference between that and a 4.0?

^ 3.85 is pretty different from a 4.0...

I think GPA isn't that important though, especially since different schools use different systems of grading. I think what's more important is how you compare relative to your class. For example, I'm ranked first at my school and I don't even have 4.0 UW because it's nearly next to impossible to get due to the stringent grading. My current UW GPA is 3.938. (W GPA 4.084)
