I have heard from many people that 4 years is strongly encouraged, but not required by most colleges. I am currently taking Spanish, but to be honest, I want to learn a different language in college that isn’t offered at my school. I am also conflicted because I am trying to fit AP Capstone into my schedule, but Spanish is interfering with it. I am not the most passionate about Spanish, but if it’s really worth taking the four years, I’ll stick with it. What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance.
Top schools expect to see 4 years of each of the 5 core subjects (English, math, science, social science, and language). However, if you have an extra courses in, say, science and/or social science, you could probably get away with just 3 years of language.
Honestly, I’d focus on the things you’re most passionate about.
D was only able to take 2 years of German because not enough students in her school for German 3 and 4. It hurt her when applying to top LACs and Ivys last year. If you have s chance to complete 4 years of a single language, do it
Looking at your user name, I’m assuming you are aiming at UMich. Are you in-state or OOS?
If you are OOS you really should take 4 years of foreign language. You can research outside of school instead of taking AP Capstone.
For in-state, I would guess it’s probably borderline, but I would ask someone else about that. I’m not quite sure how selective they are from their in state students because I’m not from the area. I still recommend it to be safe and give yourself the best possible chance. Plus if you decide you want to apply any higher than that without 4 years, you are going to run into some serious issues.
