I couldn't fit my last third year of French in my Junior year schedule...so now I'm doing it as a Senior...but its really troublesome to do this as I've had no foregin language for a year.

But I'd like to take three years of foreign language....but I was thinking if I could start taking french next semester in a community college (which would be easier and shorter)

Would that plan be acceptable if I apply to UCs and other universities?

I know colleges want three years of foreign language.

For Berkeley’s Foreign Language requirement, you need to have taken the third-year level to fulfill it. So by taking it, it MAY boost your chances (I don’t know if this is true… I mean, it can’t hurt right? unless you fail…) but you just don’t have to take foreign language at berkeley which can be difficult, hard to get in, and hard to fit in your schedule. I don’t really know how UCs view this in terms of admissions.

Okay…guys I really need more input on this.

Taking this class as a senior is difficult in my school…i find it pretty difficult to cope up to class leveled expectations…i don’t enjoy it either…

though as background info, I have taken 5 math classes (four recommended) and 5 years of science (3 recommended)
I’m the usual high scoring applicant with 2220 SAT and rank 4, President of math club, etc, etc accomplishment.

Am I really going to get rejected by Cal if I didn’t take one stupid year of foreign language?? You gotta be kidding me.

I just told you, UC’s require two years. Learn to check the actual UC website before whining on the forums about how you can’t find this information online.

Dude, fine UC requires 2 years…Meeting minumum requirement isn’t always a good thing. People are competitive nowadays.
UC claims to admit people above a 3.0 GPA. Does that mean people with just a 3.0 get into a UC? No, average GPA (though varies from UCs) of the UCs is around 3.7-4.0

I just wanted to clarify my position and get other people’s advice before I do something significant like dropping the darn subject. You got a problem with that?

In my opinion, the UC’s will not care whether you took two, three, or four years of foreign language. In terms of priority, your GPA, SAT’s, EC’s, and your admission essay will EASILY outweigh your two years of foreign language.

Your suggested route of finishing your FL requirement at a CC might work, but in my opinion is unneeded and just extra work you could do without.

Enjoy your senior year, it’s your last real year as a teenager!

It’s fine, I’m glad you apologized :]
I’ve met so many teenagers in high school who would never admit their mistake…they just keep pointlessly/illogically arguing…don’t even get me started on the girls LOL.

I apologize as well for appearing antagonistic. And thanks for the clarification as well!

Yea, I know people who got into UCs with only two years of foreign language. Besides, the foreign language requirement is on the chopping block right now due to budget cuts. So maybe they won’t even care about HS language requirments in the future.

Read the LA Times story that was in yesterday or the day before. They are planning to cut entire departments from the UCs and many are related to study of foreign culture and area studies.

You may think that taking a 3rd year of a language is difficult at your HS, but rest assured it is nothing compared to the requirement at Cal. If you do not take a third year in HS, you will be required to take 2nd semester French at Cal. You will be doing 5 days a week - only 3 absences permitted- with 10 hours outside of classwork required. There will be at least 6 exams, several compositions, online work and an oral and written final. In addition, whatever grade you receive at Cal will be calculated in your college GPA, and that will stay with you for a while. Can you get into Cal with 2 years? Yes. Do you want to deal with a lang. requirement in addition to the rest of college demands? No.

a friend of mine recently told me he graduated from high school with a 3.0 gpa and is right now in berkeley. the only thing how he got in was by stating in his uc personal statement he had leukemia.

his grades were horrible and had no activites but somehow got into berkeley. just make sure to write a great personal statement and youll get in

i only took 2 years of foreign language in hs because i didnt enjoy it and im in berkeley, so yay! but if you’re in the college of ls, you will need a semester of language here or at a community college. it’s working out fine for me because i like the language options here more so than hs where we only had french or spanish.

just take whatever you feel like. Since it’s not required, it’s not worth it stressing yourself trying to take it. If you’re applying for CoE(which I think might be the case), don’t even bother. Engineers don’t care crap about requirements outside of math and science. A 5 point increase in your SAT II math score will more than offset it.
