Hi All: I have a question. I joined most of my extracurriculars sophomore year, with the expection of four. Will my late joining of extracurriculars hurt me when it comes time to apply to college? Thanks!

Sophomore year is fine. If you’ve shown consistent dedication to a number and maybe been elected to officer positions in a couple, it will be good. However, if you started piling on a ton during Junior and (gasp) Senior year, colleges would probably realize you’re whoring yourself.

With the exception of four? How many ECs are you involved in if four is the exception?

I must concur with glassesarechic… exception of four?! Most applicants have only 2 or 3 four-year EC’s that have significant accomplishment in them. Having so many EC’s will not help you at top schools - EC’s for admission committees at HYPS and similar schools look for quality, not quantity. So having 1 or 2 EC’s with a lot of depth, leadership, time, and impact is far more preferable to a laundry list of 10 EC’s with minimal involvement in each.

oops sorry I’ve only been involved with three freshman year. I’m in about 11 extracuricullar activites now, but I don’t plan on listing them all when i apply to college

^That’s still ridiculously excessive. No need to spread yourself thin like that. Anyway, sophomore year isn’t late at all for stuff like that. Joining clubs mid-junior year and at the beginning of senior year, however, would be too late, and colleges would see right through it.
