32 act > 3.25 UM gpa ??

Hi,
I applied and was completed mid november. (OOS)
I currently have a 3.55 unweighted GPA,but 3.25 Michigan GPA, and was wondering do they completely disregard 9th grade GPA and the non-academic grades ?? For example, when uploading to their database, do they just do not upload the 9th grade grades at all ?? (because I had 4.0 for 9th grade)

Also, would 32 act kind of balance my low GPA ?? (I took the hardest classes possible)
btw, I am applying to the engineering school and I received 35 on my math and science section.

I was in a similar situation, 1490 and 3.1 mich. I was deffered.

They only look at 10th-11th grade and only academic classes.

question.... how do you calculate your UMich GPA

Luckyboy22: At this stage in the game I believe that you will be deferred considering that there are numerous applicants that have the same act score or higher along with spectacular gpa's, however, you never kno with umich so keep us posted

jkh411: to calculate ur umich gpa goes like this: Grades are determined using an unweighted 4.0 scale: A (including plus or minus ) = 4.0, B (including plus or minus) = 3.0, C (including plus or minus) = 2.0, D (including plus or minus) = 1.0, and E or F = 0.0. No extra (GPA) weight is given to Honors, Accelerated, or Advanced Placement courses; however, the difficulty of a student's curriculum is taken into consideration within the admission's process. Additionally, only academic courses from 10th and 11th grade (Foreign Language, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and English) are used to calculate the GPA.

thats no good for a kid with a fair number of B+'s

umich doesn't account for differences in grading systems.. so people who have a 93-90 B+ range have it harder.

DS is lucky, he is loaded with A-'s - I've always given him a hard time about not getting the straight A. At least to Michigan, it doesn't matter. His average comes out to 3.62 unwtd and 3.6 UMich, we'll just have to see if it;s good enough.

Yeah, no kidding. I had 4 B+'s last semester, and 3 were in AP/AC classes. It killed my UM GPA.

branching off of luckyboy’s question…

does a person with a high gpa like a 3.98 with a 26 ACT have a higher chance of getting into the university of michigan than a person who has a 3.8 and a 32 ACT ?

I had 2 B+s in both semesters last year in honors classes. Luckily I didn’t have any sophmore year.

Unfortunate about the B+s. I was on the lucky side of it (meaning about half of my As were actually A-s with only 1 B+, and I’d bet half of my A-s were right on the 90-91% mark) My Umich GPA was probably higher than my HS GPA.

Were most of the Bs in English, History, and Language classes? They’ll take into account which classes you got what grades in. So if you took a bunch of Math/Science APs and had As in all of those, combined with the 35 M/S on ACT, you may be better off than you think. If not though, not much chance.

Michlove, I think a 3.8/32 beats a 3.98/26, but 3.98/26 WAY beats 3.25/32.

I would say that 3.8/32 beats 3.98/26. I would even say that a 3.6/32 beats a 4.0/26. The reason is that gpa’s are extremely relative, because everyone comes from different schools, programs, etc, so it’s quite hard to compare everyone via gpa. However, the ACT is the ACT no matter who you are, so I think it’s their best way to compare everyone. I think this is true for all standardized tests (MCAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, PCAT, etc.). A 32 is a pretty phenomenal score by any standard.

Nope, because 3.98 and 3.8 are fairly similar, it is probably just one more B. But a low test score will make it worse. a 26 isn’t in the middle 50% of UM’s students. However a 3.8 is.

It’s not one more B. It’s more like 3.

thank youuu guys :)

hey I’m wondering what happened to luckyboy because I have a 3.58 Unweighted Mich. GPA and a 3.68 Unweighted GPA and I do not know how the weighting system works (Can anyone fill me in on that?) with a bunch of other supporting ECs and a 31 ACT

The thread is originally from 2005, I doubt he’s ever going to come back and tell us. My first reply in this thread I hadn’t noticed the date.

after looking at the other posts he made, he was waitlisted and then got in off the waitlist.
