The 35W bridge going over the Mississippi River, the busiest bridge in Minnesota, collapsed yesterday in Minneapolis around 6:05 PM. Have you guys heard of this? What do you think?

I've heard of this. I think it's bad.

this has been on the news all day....that was a terrible accident. but i'm glad there weren't any fatalities ( except for one, i think).

^^ actually theres 4 deaths
its so unfortunate
how can a bridge just unexpectedly collapse?
wow....

It wasn't necessarily "unexpected."

The government review said it wasn't stable (but not unsafe to drive, for whatever reasons).

AND they had been using jackhammers when it collapsed...

My friend and I drove over that bridge at 5:30. It collapsed a little after six.

I'm still a little shaken.

Johnson: No matter what the government review said, the bridge collapse was absolutely unexpected. If it was "expected" to collapse, they wouldn't have been allowed to drive on it. The report said there were "structural deficiencies," but that doesn't mean it was expected to collapse.

The death count is 4, but there are eight people missing and presumed dead and 5 people critically injured.

What I meant was that it wasn't truly unexpected (I was not implying (or thinking) that they expected the bridge to collapse).
Had they not known of any structural dammage, then yes, it would have been completely out of the blue.

It's rather scary to think that we still use bridges on a daily basis that could potentially lead to something as devastating as this...
