36 Unreachable in English?

On the February ACT, I got a 35 in English. But I got both 18 and 18 in the subject subscores. How is that a 35? If I had gotten a 36 in English, I would have gotten a 36 overall.

You can miss one and still get 18 in a subsection. The sum of the subsections does not necessarily correlate to the score.

correct, 18 and 18 can still be a 35

Hmm this doesnt make too much sense to me.
So for English -0 was 36, -1 was 35
In this thread, we agree that 18 and 18 is a -1, or a 35
But in another thread, someone said that they got a 35 with subsections of 17 and 18 and got a 35 (Here is the link where this is: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/act-preparation/868491-official-act-results-febuary-10-a-14.html</a> )
That means that that person got lower, or -2, so then -1 and -2 would be a 35, -3 a 34, and so on…
But isnt that a highly doubtful and lenient curve? And I’ve never seen this kind of curve for English.

If I were you, I would contact ACT

The only assumption that I may have been wrong on is if 17/18 and 18/18 are both -1s, which seems unlikely.

It makes sense. Someone posts something like this after every test it seems like; it’s nothing out of the ordinary.

“So for English -0 was 36, -1 was 35”

How do u know this for a fact?

also, hotpursuit that’s because missing 1 in one subsection would have been a 17 while missing 1 in the other subsection would have hbeen an 18

ahh i get it.
lol i’m still a noob to this forum

Isnt the english almost always -0 36 and then -1 35
I havent seen a test where it hasnt been

what about reading this time

i think olleger established that reading was -0 36 and -1 35 and so on in another thread

I also got an 18 usage/mechanics and 17 rhetorical skills and a 35 in English

I got the reverse of UVAhopeful (18 rhetorical skills and 17 usage/mechanics) and I got a 35 in English.

ok here’s a problem

If people got 17 and 18 on the subsections (both ways - see UVA and firesoul above) and got a 35 while someone else got 18 and 18 and got a 35, doesnt that mean that -2 was a 35?

^Very possible. I remember that there were three questions I was unsure about, and I probably got one of them right and the other two wrong.

@firesoul

I sent u a pm

I think I have possible evidence that -2 in the English may have been a 35. My reasoning is below. Sorry for the length.

So apparently, three different subscores all yielded 35’s in English
(see here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/...e-english.html</a>)

Scenario 1 = 18 Usage/Mechanics, 18 Rhetorical Skills = 35
Scenario 2 = 18 Usage/Mechanics, 17 Rhetorical Skills = 35
Scenario 3 = 17 Usage/Mechanics, 18 Rhetorical Skills = 35

This means that the curve was the following for each subsection (out of 18) was something like this:

***Notice how one of the sections must have -1 = 18 because someone got 18, 18 for the subsections and did not get a 36.

Usage Mechanics Rhetorical Skills
-0 = 18 -0 = 18
-1 = 18 -1 = 17
-2 = 17

Scenario 1 (18 Usage/Mechanics, 18 Rhetorical Skills = 35) and Scenario 2 (18 Usage/Mechanics, 17 Rhetorical Skills = 35) could both work using this curve because in both cases, it was possible to miss one question and get a 35.

However, Scenario 3 (17 Usage/Mechanics, 18 Rhetorical Skills = 35) would does not work if -2 was a 34 instead of a 35. This is because in order to get 18 in rhetorical skills, one must miss 0 questions. To get a 17 in Usage, one must miss TWO questions. However, the student still got a 35.

Now, if we assume the curve was flipped, then Scenario 3 does work but now scenario 2 does not. This is shown below

***Once again, note that one of the sections must have -1 = 18 because someone got 18, 18 in the subsections and got a 35.

Usage Mechanics Rhetorical Skills
-0 = 18 -0 = 18
-1 = 17 -1 = 18
-2 = 16 -2 = 17

Scenario 2 (18 Usage/Mechanics, 17 Rhetorical Skills = 35 ) does not work because in order to get 18 in usage, on must miss 0 questions. However, to get a 17 subscore in Rhetorical skills, one must miss 2 questions. Yet the student still got a 35.

If you see anything wrong with this let me know.

I’ve gotten a 36 in English. I find it’s the easiest section of them all.
