3's on AP exams

u don't know what you're talking about.

Kaiten, you don't have to send an official school report for the admissions process. Admissions Counselors just look at self-reported scores or transcripts that might have them and trust that they are truthful. Their purpose in the admissions process (like someone mentioned earlier) is only to see how deserving an applicant is of AP class grades. If someone got an A and a 2, it means the high school doesn't really have difficult classes or subscribes to major grade inflation. If somone, say has almost straight As but a couple of Bs in AP classes and gets 5s on those tests, admin counselors might look with less disdain upon the lower GPA. (this is only for talking about elite schools though... because a couple of Bs at most colleges won't kill you xP)

Find a college that requires APs for admission. You won't (unless its in lieu of SATs or something)

Just don't submit them

I got a 2 on my AP US History...and a B- in the class. The class was really hard...but we didn't learn the stuff on the major essay. Our teacher was very sexist...so my essay on Woman's Idealism sucked majorly.

I still got into a top 40 LAC. With a terrible GPA on top of that 2.

I remember taking the US AP test...I knew basically nothing about women in US history, just 1 fact or two, or some sort of REALLY general trend. Still got a 5 on the AP test :) but I also got a 3 on my chem test and spanish test, so...

haha I got a 2 on my World History test.
But no one cares about World History anyway..... =P

Psh, I sure hope they care about World History, worked semi-hard for a 5 man (I skipped school in the morning since it was an afternoon test and spent it reading my PR book from cover to cover lol)

If you are applying to top 20 schools, I question why you even reported your scores of a 3. If I were you, I would have left those out completely assuming ur boards are stronger.

I got a 3 on an AP exam, and I got into a top 20 school. It's definitely possible!

what's wrong with 3's?

In the world of the CC:

AP scores:

1: /wrist is your only option
2: Did you even try?
3: That's a bad score...for trying
4: That's an average score...for trying
5: What did you expect?

lol, that might be slightly exaggerated

Oboe: It depends on where you fit into the CC student body. A 3 is neither bad nor especially good - it's about average (collegeboard says a 3 would equate to a 'C' grade in a college course).

However, the majority of CC students are interested in the elite schools and for entrance into those schools, people (CCers) believe 5s are expected and 4s are tolerated (although people with 3s do get into the top schools, the acceptance rates are so so low @ most of the best schools... that everyone wants to max his or her chance by getting the best AP scores).

What if I only took 1 semester out of 2 of an AP course, and scored a 3? Would that be looked upon badly by a top 20 college?

yesanyonecanwalkintoarandomaptestandgeta3go/wristplz

psssh...w/e

i got a bad score for trying.

lhDC, it's still possible to get in. However, a 3 on an AP exam might make them look at your grade for the course in school differently. If they see you got an A in the class (I don't know.. I'm just assuming) but only managed to score the average 3 when compared to the nation, they might not value your A as highly compared to say, someone who got a B in a class @ some other high school, but a 5 on the AP exam (because your school might have an easier manner of grading).

Or they might think you test poorly.

shrug Cross your fingers. So much depends on luck @ the top 20 ._. because they can afford to throw out everyone they accept.. and accept another batch from the left over applicants and never notice a change in student quality >< the caliber of applicants is that freakishly high...

Thanks kaseyditz. I DID get an A first semester when I actually had the APUSH class, but the thing is that I moved to another school for a semester in Wasington that did NOT offer APUSH, only Honors USH, and the class was quite frankly weak and lacking.

okay, i wold just like to take this opportunity to point out to all those people who told me i wouldnt get in anywhere because of 3's that i actually got accepted to Duke.. not only that, but i'm a semi-finalist in the Robertson Scholars Program

Perhaps this was just bad journalism but in one of the USNWR mags a year or two ago, one article featured a bunch of hypothetical students and some admissions officials evaluated them. One of these hypothetical people took AP course but didn't take the exam. Then one of the adcom people made it seem serious, questioning the student's sense of motivation.

Do adcoms even know if you didn't take an AP exam? How is it viewed?

well, they's assume you either failed or didnt take them if you don't report them on your app
