I'm in a 4.3 system, too. 3.66 divided by 4.3 is 85%.. is it treated as 91+ instead? weird..

Which is why.....

THE NUMBER THAT YOU GET WHEN DIVIDING YOUR GPA BY THE MAX GPA HAS NO MEANING

That's weird....
Anyway, what GPA would be recommended in 4.3 system if you're aiming at top grad schools? Would it be no different from that in 4.0: getting at least 3.6?

Just swap any A+ 4.3's for a 4.0 in the calculation I think is typical. Converting down by a percentage reduction doesn't seem right since in my experience an A+ in a 4.3 system is much tougher achievement than an A in a 4.0

Dividing by the max has no meaning.

Imagine a 10.0 GPA system, where it is basically impossible to get anything greater than 5 - everyone would have a 50% GPA percentage - its totally arbitrary, and largely useless to compare across universities, given different systems/standards/grade inflation.

yes ysk1, it would be no different.

If A+ (4.3) is treated as 4.0 in the calculation, then would it be meaningless to try to get as much A+'s as possible, because they will be considered as A anyway without gaining any extra points?

I can't believe this thread is still going!!!

FOR THE LAST TIME: 3.8 in a 4.0 System is equal to 3.8 in a 4.3 system as long as you turn your A+'s into A's.

I love this thread

Red Sox,

If you really love this thread so much, I will keep it going byt pretending that I didn't get the drift of the 4.0 vs. 4.3 discussion if you want.

"So, if my buddy has a 3.2 in a 4.3 system, does he actually have a 2.9?"

A+'s are useful if you want to apply to oxford because they don't understand squat about the madness of the American system ;).

Being serious tho - A+'s will still be on your transcript... the GPA is just a summary measure.

the only difference is that the A+ is recognized, meaning that number scores 98 and higher are recognized as a 4.3 instead of a 4.0.
By having a 4.3 GPA is not the equivalent to an A-, it would be recognized as an A or a 4.0 in the 4.0 system.
The 4.3 system recognizes students who receive grades near perfection and the rest of the scale matches up with the 4.0 scale and therefore there is no conversion other than taking into account that a 4.3 grade would translate into a 4.0.
(If you never received a 4.3, then there is no conversion for your GPA!)

Generally on most applications, there is a place to add the scale. In addition, when receiving official transcripts from schools they also state what the total scale is based on.

As far as the rest of the conversion, Yobish is correct. In the 4.0 system, no “credit” is given for your A+ grade. 4.3 scale just allows the A+ to be recognized above an “A” grade.

I know this was an extremely long time ago but I just read the thread and thought it’d be nice to clear some things up for future high school students who look at this.
My high school is based on a 4.3 scale, so I know this system pretty well. There’s barely any difference between a 4.3 scale and 4 scale (if you don’t have any A+'s). Here’s something to guide you by:
A+ = 4.3
A = 4
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3
And so on just like the 4 scale. The only differences are the A+'s: on a 4 scale it is a 4, not a 4.3. My gpa right now is a 3.8, but when I convert it to the 4 scale nothing changes because I have no A+'s. This is why the difference between the two isn’t that big (unless you get all A+'s, in which case congratulations)

Um, first look at the +/- system. 4.3 will be on +/- whereas some 4.0 scales are not hence instead of a 2.7 for that 81 you have a 3.0. As for the 4.3, it is a great balancing weight. It gives you a better opportunity to stay above 3.0. Ie one class wont decimate you under the 4.3. Very important for grad students needing to carry a 3.o to graduate. Dont stress, I carried a 2.55 with a BA in poli sci and a BBA in Finance and Mgt…Currently im cruising with an A avg in a ranked EMBA program. Forget worrying about your GPA and worry about getting an education. Trust me take the professors the general pop hates…it will pay off.
