4.0 Freshman GPA at Stern?

I would like to keep my options of transfer open when I go to school in the fall semester. Stern is a great, prestigious school; I'm just not 100% sure yet if it's the right place for me.

I know that some schools (*Cornell) are infamous for grade deflation. While I'd expect Stern to be competitive, I'm uncertain of how hard it is to maintain a perfect GPA Freshman year.

Can anyone here provide insight?

Even if you could be top in the class at stern, freshman year you have to take wte (writingthe essay) and unless you are really good at writing, it can hurt your gpa if you got over a 700 on the writing on the sat, you can exempt out of it

I’m only so-so at writing.

I scored a 750 on the SAT (79 8) breakdown. This will let me exempt?

Well you got a 750 on the writing sat and you need a 700 to be exempt from wte so no you won’t be exempt…

If you get at least a 700 on the writing portion, then u exempt out of WTE but u need to take the cultures class instead. If you get above a 750 on the writing portion you exempt out of WTE and take an elective instead. Other than that freshman classes are pretty easy if you did well in school. Stats would probably be the other hard class if you took it

@collegeforyou11: There’s no need to be an ass here. A “stupid question” for clarification is often necessary to prevent miscommunication.

@pwnzal: I appreciate the response. I looked into the Stern freshman curriculum and couldn’t find exactly where it mentions the “high SAT” alternative. In part, I do wish to improve my writing but my priority is maintaining a high GPA.

I’m am currently taking Calculus III after a course in differential equations. I got a 5 in the AP Stats test sophomore year. However, I suffered pretty horrendously in Taylor Series/Special Integration at the end of Calculus BC. I will most likely take Stats and Calculus II to gain a fuller understanding of each subject.

One thing I really lack is micro/macro economics. I might do some preparation beforehand, but how hard are the intro business-related courses there?

idk how hard the classes are, but there are no AP credits given for calculus, stats, and macro and micro. They are used for placement instead

Can u be exempt out of an english class if you scored well on the ACT too? I submitted my ACT and I scored a 35 in the english section…so I hope that can exempt me from that? I don’t want to waste time in classes that aren’t necessary…lol

I was wondering the same.

They don’t mention anything about the ACT that I can see…

@pwnzal, this year I’m taking AP Macro/Micro and next year I’m taking AP Calc BC & AP Stats. If I get a 4/5 on these exams will I be exempt from introductory classes? Instead of taking intro statistics freshman year, etc; I’ll just be taking intermediate statistics?

I’m not exactly sure as I’m not a student there yet (I’ll be starting next year) but I think since it is used for placement purposes, calculus credit will have u taking a harder class. I’m not sure exactly about the other classes. So don’t take my word for this

Can a good score on the ACT writing exempt me from WTE or is it only SAT?

bump for an answer.
Heard that CAS will not exempt ANTONE from WTE no matter the SAT/ACT. Is it school specific?

yea bump, i think that NYU should offer a chance for students who took the ACT instead of the SAT to be exempt

Just call Admissions and ask to speak to someone in CAS and ASK THEM. Don’t just sit around and speculate on here, because it’s clear no one knows the answer here.
