4.0 GPA Not Accepted to UCB or UCLA Chance my Appeal

Hello All-

I am a community college transfer student that applied to the following UC's:UCB, UCLA UCSD. I got rejected from UCB and UCLA. I'm in a huge mess and really need help!
My stats:
English major, 4.0 GPA
Completed Major Prep courses as honors and IGETC Req.
Extra-Curricular: President of AGS Honor Society, Commissioner of Public Information for student government, Director (Chair) of the Inter-Club Council. Highly involved in theater, (Also, I was the lead in last semester's play production). Associate editor and published writer of our literary journal.
Work Experience: English tutor on campus for fellow college students, Weekends I work as a creative writing and Algebra tutor for youth in 6-8 grade. Also, I work as a waitress.
Essay: Overseen by two English Professor's and my boss at the English Writing Center.

In reviewing my application I found that I only have 59 units (Not the standard 60) accounted for on my transcript. A couple of weeks ago my counselor contacted me saying that she had miscalculated my units and I had to add a late-start class, but unfortunately my transcript was not updated. Negligence on both of our parts by far!!! (Mostly me :/) I plan to appeal to provide them with the change of my courses because I now have 64 units.

This has been troubling me non-stop. Now that I realized I was supposed to update them I completed an update form for UCSD. They release decisions on Tuesday, so I hope it reaches in time. To be honest, half of me wants to give up, but the other half is saying to fight this. Please chance me or offer advice!!

Thank you

That’s a really good reason for an appeal. Definitely go through with it.

^ Agree! The reason for an appeal is to submit new compelling information that was not originally in the UC App. Your updated amount of units is definitely that! Appeal! Your stats are pretty good. You’ll get in. Good luck!

I think I will. I am just worried about it because the letter’s of rejection strongly discourage one to do so. There is an option for Berkeley to submit a letter of recommendation to appeal. I am thinking of asking my counselor, though I am unsure if she would want to. It only seems right in my opinion.

@CEC1889

PLEASE APPEAL. You definitely deserve a spot at one of those schools!

Based on your stats, you should definitely appeal.

The following information I received through admissions:
The reviewing process is done in steps. The first step is that they check if you have (or will have) 60 units completed. If they don’t see that, you will automatically be rejected. They won’t even look at the rest of your application.

Most appeals are a waste of time because the new info doesnt matter however you for SURE are one of those rare cases when it is a very good idea to appeal. Good luck!

blame your counselor. lady or dude needs to use a calculator

If I was you, I would ask the lead advisor (faculty) of AGS Honor Society or the boss of the English Writing Center for the recommendation letter.

You don’t lose anything if you appeal. So, why not?

This is one of the few times when I think an appeal will be granted. Stay positive!

Call them first and then make an appeal. I think this is a situation which can definitely be successfully overturned.

Thank you all so much for your support! I just received my letter of rejection today from UCSD. It seems that I will have to appeal their decision as well. Mentally this is a huge hinderance, but I will have to remain focused on moving forward with this appeal.

@mike011x I will call tomorrow to see what I can do to omit the appeal process, but from my understanding of doing some quick reading, I think the appeal process was made for situations such as this.

According to UCSD they will “only consider appeals from applicants with new and compelling information that was not included in your original application. Possible grounds for appeal include recent and significant information regarding personal circumstances which may have impacted your academic performance, errors in your UC application, extraordinary special achievement/recognition received since your application was submitted, medical issues, or financial hardship.”

If so, I think I qualify under “Errors in UC Application”. UCB has a similar to almost identical process.

@BabySmurf Out of curiosity, why do you suggest I have them write the letter instead my counselor? I too was considering having either of them write it.

Also- I wanted to give everyone an update. Goodness forbid someone else find themselves in a similar situation knock on wood. I spoke to my advisor who works closely with our Dean. She checked my transcript on file and it only shows 43 Units as of right now. Seems someone did not update my courses, including some Honors notation. (I will be filing a complaint as soon as this is all over!) She has creating a written document along with the dean to state the mishap on behalf of the college, and an official copy of my transcript to be delivered alongside. However, the first step is for me to file a written statement of why I feel I should appeal. When requested by UCLA, UCB and UCSD, I will send all proof/documents.

Here is what I figured I would address in my letter of appeal. It is all I can think of as "new and compelling* Any advice?

Correct courses were not accounted for. Transcript showed only 59 units, though I have 64.

I did not include any of this in my application: I moved out in July (before application was due), to escape an abusive relationship. Now that I am living away from home I have been struggling quite a bit financially. So last semester I worked two jobs at once for the first time. And working three jobs this semester.

I am still maintaining a 4.0 GPA as I have A’s in all my classes knock on wood

My participation in extra-curricular activites remains high. My position of Director of the Inter Club Council and Commissioner of Public Information were earned this semester.

Received Dean’s and President’s Honors Awards for my GPA

Received an award for my “dedication to ASO” (student government)- earned through accumulating the highest amount of participation points. (Avg=300, I received 800).

Anyone who has been through this process, going through it or has insight to it please help!!

BTT Please can anyone offer advice about writing the appeal?
