Is a weighted GPA of 4.1 very low? My school adds 0.7 for each AP & 0.5 for each H's course.

I think the best way to decide whether it is low or not is to compare yourself to others at your schools who have been accepted to the schools that you’re interested in. Different schools have different grading standards that makes it very hard to judge whether one GPA is better than another.

it depends on your EC outside of the classroom

You should be more worried about your UW GPA and the rigor of the course load.
Having said that, yes, your weighted GPA of 4.1 is relatively low for an Ivy bound applicant.

Why would he be more worried about uw gpa? Colleges weigh grades for a reason, dont they?

The most important factor is rank. W GPA really doesn’t matter since every school has a different weighting system, just as each school has a different grading system.

yeah dude colleges look at unwighted GPAs.

and dont be a downer! plenty of 4.1 GPA kids have gotten into great schools, but only if they have other accomplishments outside the classroom

if you got nothing else going on other than school…ha then dont even bother applying

Because each school practice different grading policies, top colleges tend to consider applicants’ UW GPA rather than W GPA. I would like to emphasize that the rigor of the course load is generally more important than the GPA itself.

^You just contradicted yourself… “each school practices different grading policies” EXACTLY. This is why RANK and course rigor is most important.

^“each school practices different grading policies” -> some of the most competitive high schools do not rank at all. That is when UW GPA and rigor of the course load come into play.

Also, I don’t see how I contradicted myself. Elaborate please.

UW GPA trumps all.

UW GPA obviously depends on grading policy.

LOL UW GPA definitely does NOT trump all. An UW GPA of a 4.0 means that a student could have been taking the lowest-level classes and earned all A’s in them.

Weighted rank trumps all.

haha what I meant by “because each school practices different grading policies” was that each school has different grade points for AP/Honor courses. It seems you misunderstood my original post there.

Also, rank definitely does not trump all. If you were an admissions officer, would you rather accept a valedictorian who has a 3.0 UW GPA or a kid who is in top 20% and has 3.9 UW GPA? Granted they both had the equivalent course rigor.

No, I didn’t misunderstand you.

Grading has nothing to do with weighting.

Yes, you did. Grading policies generally include how weighting works and how GPA is calculated. I’m not just talking about numerical range, like A=90+ and B=80-89 etc, here.

Also, you haven’t elaborated on how I contradicted myself yet. To contradict something is to speak contrary to the assertion, and I do not find that in my previous post.

Veggieburger;

You have NO idea what you are talking about. You can be val in a school where everyone is a moron and be val with a 2.7 GPA.

Weighted GPA doesn’t demonstrate the course rigor. Schools can have huge grade inflation in regards to how APs are considered in W GPA.

UW GPA is without all the fluff. Therefore, UW GPA trumps all.

I actually do have AN idea of what I’m talking about :]

“Weighted rank trumps all.” <– This is what I said.

Yes, but your position holds no basis, therefore it is a moot point.

If you’re not an AdCom, or you haven’t even applied to schools yet, you don’t know what you are talking about.

And you know all about admissions because you haven’t even applied to college yet.

Nothing trumps all. They look at everything, but in the end, nothing matters more than course rigor and your grades. They look at if you’re taking the hardest course load and if you’re doing well in it. As simple as that … they could really care less about the specific number of your UW or W GPA.

For the record, AP scores are probably among the least important parts of your application. And stop crying about American schools; not all of them are a joke, trust me.

Well it definitely depends on your school because each school not only weighs differently, but offers different courses.

For example, at my school, you can’t take any honors or AP classes freshmen year, and only up to two sophomore year, so we all have relatively low weighted GPAs, but plenty of people still go to top schools (10+ Ivy, 30+ UCB this year).

Then there’s the actual weighing system, which varies. I think you’ll be fine!
