My gpa is of 4.4 in a 5.0 grading system, my school uses a 5.0 instead of the american 4.0. What would my gpa be when converted to the 4.0 scale? Is the 5.0 a weighted scale? I’ve seen people say they have a 4.2 weighted and 3.7 unweighted which confused me.
Thank you!
What’s confusing about it?
Unweighted GPA is the regular GPA without all the extra points due to taking advanced classes. Weighted GPA is the addition of extra points due to taking APs, DEs, honors, etc.
If your school 's scale is a 5.0 (UW) then in the 4.0 scale your GPA should be around 3.5 (UW).
If you want to calculate your UW GPA (4.0) scale and for whatever reason your school’s system doesn’t provide it, just use A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, and D=1.0 and take the average of all of your grades. Every class that appears on your transcript counts.
If all of your classes are weighted as 5.0, then your UW GPA should be 3.4. For example, MIT uses the 5.0 scale so I just subtract 1 to obtain the 4.0 equivalent.
In any case, A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0, take the weighted average of your grades.
If I’m understanding the question correctly, the OP is an intl student whose school uses a 5.0 scale. Weighting is an American phenomenon, so probably has no bearing in the case.
If the above is correct, and you are asking for the purpose of college applications, do not convert unless the college asks. The vast majority will not ask for your GPA to be converted, so use whatever it says on your transcript.
UCalifornia schools will ask that the GPA be converted, and their site will give specifics.
Additionally, while colleges will understand the GPA scale of your country and its associated grade deflation, the vast majority here will not. So for your own sanity, do not post in What Are My Chances unless you have a very thick skin.
Thank you for all your replies!
Yes, I’m an international student and my school uses a 5.0 scale. There’s no A,B,C OR D’s and it’s just numbers from 1-5.
It confuses me a lot due to the fact that I’m 2nd on the top 10 of my class yet my GPA according to some people is very low? Which is why I’m asking if I converted it wrongly or if there’s no need to convert it.
Thank you!
Hence why I told you not to post in What Are My Chances. The posters, for the most part, do not understand non-US systems. The important thing is that college admissions will.
Thank you so much for your help!
