I hope some of you upper class folks in the know may be able to help me answer a question recently posed by my daughter who is a first year. She was fortunate enough to have placed out of three semesters of her four semester language requirement prior to entering school this fall. She has inquired whether her fourth semester must be taken in the same language (Italian) or whether she is free to begin another language and have that semester satisfy her fourth semester requirement. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I believe the requirement is that students "demonstrate proficiency", not simply take four semesters of a language.

Thanks. I know she has placed out of the 101, 102 and 201 courses. Still not sure whether that meets the proficiency requirement. Sorry to be thick but I suspect she is still one course short of fulfilling that requirement?

The way I see it, she is trying to demonstrate proficiency in Italian and was able to place out of the first three levels. She needs to do one semester in Italian 202 to show that she's proficient.

Starting over and taking, say, French 101 wouldn't do anything to show that she was proficient in a foreign language.

I think her first stop, after checking the web, should be her adviser or Garrett Hall to get CLAS’ interpretation of the requirement.

I agree. Thanks for the help.

You need to have either:
UVA credit for a language class that ends in 202 (Spanish 202, German 202, Italian 202...) - sans some exceptions (those end in 212, etc - and are listed on the page already linked)
Or you need transfer credit that is recorded as equivalent to 202
Or you need an SAT/AP/IB/UVA placement/etc test score that is equivalent to 202 (again, listed on that page).

It is not merely 'four semesters of a language' - it is credit through, and including, the 202 ("intermediate") level in a language.

If your daughter has any other questions about if she has fulfilled requirements, a great resource is the VISTAA report, which you acquire through ISIS. It spells out which requirements you have and have not fulfilled. The foreign language one is: "completion of 202-level in all foreign languages (except portuguese [port212]. chinese [chin206], and polish [pol222]), placement by sat ii subject test, orientation placement test or dept recommendation."

Thank you. That is of great help. I will certainly pass it on to her with due credit to those who have been so helpful here.
