well, I was an early decision candidate who just got accepted recently and I had 4 recs sent (1 from my counselor, and 3 from teachers just like you). So it shouldn't be a problem. Before I applied, I called Barnard and they told me that you can send in 4 but it's not guaranteed that they'll read ALL of them. So be sure that each rec is great.

peace...do u think it is better to just pick 2 teachers out of the 3...one of my teachers I had during this past summer

she is a professor so I thought that would have more weight...I took a class at a college during the summer...do u think barnard even cares she teaches at college rather than high school.

Im applying as a woman stuides major..and I took a woman studies class with her so I thought it would be helpful...

do you think that she is a woman studies professor is will have some wieght....

As for choosing 2 out of the 3, it really depends on your relationships with the three teachers. If they all would give good recs, I'd keep 'em. Also, it depends on what you want to major in, I would think. I, for example, wanted to show my interest and skills in english, journalism, and political sci, so I got recs from my english, journalism, and gov teachers. So, I think it's a great idea that you get a rec from the prof who taught you women's studies, as long as she likes you as a person/student.

And it wouldn't matter so much if the person giving you the rec was a prof or a reg. teacher. What matters most is that they write a something about how great you are. :)

At the info session when I visited, one of the admissions counselors told me directly that four recommendations was a good number. She just said they don't want to have to read a million recs that don't really make it clear what's important to you. If all four have meaning, then you're good.

I would encourage that if you are having four recs it's better if they are from people who know you in different situations (ie 4 teachers seems superfluous but 2 teachers and one coach and one boss or advisor would be meaningful)

I don't think it's too much-- I had the same number of recs. I mean, a rec for your college counselor is required, and so are two from different teachers. The fourth one is completely optional and I guess sometimes unnecessary although I DID submit a fourth one... I submitted ones from an English, Biology, and Art History teacher, the Art History one being the "extra" one. I wanted to include that to emphasize my interest in Art History, which I briefly mentioned in my "Why Barnard" short answer. In addition, I felt like my Art History teacher knew me beyond the classroom setting, so I knew the rec would touch on the academic side as well as the personal side.

Anyways, my counselor made a point of telling me that 3 teacher recs are okay... but NO MORE.

3 teachers is fine. I submitted the required guidance counselor rec plus recs from my English and Anthropology teachers, in addition to my supplemental newspaper advisor rec.
