40 Acre Scholars Program

any word yet?

congratulations! when did the call come?

congrats! i wish theyd email the rest of us.

Who got a call?

there was a post by someone…apparently it was deleted :/

still waiting for the call that probably will not come

Haha maybe there really is no scholarship. Those darn UT Alumni just wanted to mess with us =p

I’m starting to wonder whether any calls were made at all… What did the deleted post say?

No, there were definitely calls made. One of my friends was invited to the finalist weekend. It is unfortunate only 30 got chosen this year, but…so it goes.

The calls were made yesterday. I actually called them late yesterday to confirm that it was the notification day, and yes it was, and no my kiddo was not on the list, and yes they were just wrapping up the calls. This was a very competitive scholarship, very self selecting and the outcome not surprising. She did say they would be sending an email soon to everyone along the lines of “the finalists have been selected…etc.”

I’m disappointed they are only funding 30 and talented and hardworking students didn’t make the cut.

It does seem like such a small number for such a large school. I wish they had more merit scholarships anyway.

They are actually only funding 10. Of the thirty that go to finalist weekend, only 10 will receive the scholarship. :(

A friend of mine’s S got a call last night. He has a 2400 SAT and is graduating #1 in his class with lots of other ECs. He lives in another state so clearly UT was not looking to keep top Texas kids in state with this scholarship. He was told that about 800 applied that it was narrowed to the top 30 finalists for 10 scholarships. He was also told that he needed to give them notice by 5pm today if he intended to attend the finalist weekend, implying that some people might be on the bubble to get a call today.

The emails send out a few weeks ago made it very clear that you had to attended the finalist weekend to get a spot. So I am sure there are a few bubble spots, but I am not sure the risk/reward of traveling when you were on the bubble would be worth it because I am sure they had to rank these kids and you would certainly be at a tremendous disadvantage during that weekend.

But the 5PM deadline is good to know. I guess there is always a chance the phone could ring today…lol…not. It does not surprise me that they are courting out of state students, but as a state university, it would be nice if they invested in the talent that lies within the state.

Endowment funds by definition preserve the principal and only the interest can be spent. So, when interest rates are down, the amount that can be spent is down. Interest rates are almost zero. I’m sure the Texas Exes would rather be giving out 75 than 10. The money just isn’t there! As great as our Texas students are, there are talented students who had the misfortune (LOL) of being raised elsewhere. Let’s bring 'em to Texas and add them to our awesome population! I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could!

In state students already have enough opportunities for merit scholarships plus their tuition is way cheaper

I am not aware of all of these merit scholarships for in-state students that you “speak” of.

I haven’t seen any specific in-state “only” merit or need based scholarships. That is not to say there are none, just saying I haven’t seen that, at all.

True, in-state students do enjoy lower tuition, but any OOS who gets a certain amount of scholarship from UT will get the in-state rate. That’s very generous in my view.

I pay Texas taxes and will for the rest of my life. That is why my S gets an in-state rate. Maybe you OOS will love Texas and pay Texas taxes the rest of your life. If you are hardworking and law-abiding, welcome to Texas (it is like a whole other country).

this scholarship was supposed to be only available to in-state students, at least this opening year. that was the very purpose of it…if out of state student were offered, that…would irk me, to say the least.
