Yeah, I had figured they would be targeting out-of-staters, so while I’m bummed that I didn’t get a call, I can’t say I’m surprised. Oh well

Edit: I don’t think I saw anywhere where they said it was in-state only. I though they were trying to work the Forty Acres program up towards the Jefferson or the Morehead-Cain, insofar as it makes a public school a national “presence”

“Endowment funds by definition preserve the principal and only the interest can be spent. So, when interest rates are down, the amount that can be spent is down. Interest rates are almost zero. I’m sure the Texas Exes would rather be giving out 75 than 10. The money just isn’t there! As great as our Texas students are, there are talented students who had the misfortune (LOL) of being raised elsewhere. Let’s bring 'em to Texas and add them to our awesome population! I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could!”

I completely agree, and was glad to see someone recognized that UT is giving as much as they can in the face of millions of dollars of budget cuts, letting staff and faculty go, and STILL trying to remain competitive. If you want more scholarships to be given, we need good alumni that are willing to give–and UT is currently recruiting them in and out of state.

"Thank you for applying to the Forty Acres Scholars Program at The University of Texas at Austin (UT). We received approximately 800 applications for this full-ride merit scholarship. This scholarship is extremely competitive and the strength of the applicant pool was exceptional. We received applications from valedictorians, National Merit Scholars, activists, accomplished musicians and recipients of prestigious national awards and honors.

We regret to inform you that you have not been selected as one of the 30 finalists for the Forty Acres Scholars Program. However, we encourage you to attend UT and join the Longhorn community. We hope you will continue to be leaders in and out of the classroom. "

As an awardee of this scholarship, let me tell y’all that almost all of the 10 scholars are from texas, in state. A few did come to the weekend that were from out of state, but they were definitely in the minority.
