So it's coming down to senior year schedule time and I'm wondering about taking ap French 4. I really hate taking foreign languages, but I've heard colleges want you to do all four years. I've had a fairly rigorous course load (ap Chem, bio, physics b, comp science, English, and us history) with everything above 94 averages. I'm very math and science focused so I'm wondering what good more french will do me. I'm applying to MIT, CalTech, UChicago, Princeton, Berkeley, Stanford, Columbia, and Yale.

Well colleges like to see that you’re well-rounded and even when you apply to grad school, that well-roundedness is still important(which is why you should minor in something other than math/science if that’s your major). I’m taking AP french now (my 4th year) and although I’m more science focused, I’m glad that I’m doing it. Even if you don’t end up studying french in college, it’s good to at least be proficient in another language and it’s cool in general. It’s nice if you ever want to travel to France or a francophone country. So I would do a 4th year just for the outside benefits that are beyond academics.

You might want to contact the admissions reps for the schools that you’re interested in and ask their advice. That’s what D did and they were very nice…though not exactly helpful since half said “take AP Spanish for senior year so you’ll be well-rounded” and half said “take another AP science if you find STEM subjects more interesting.” But, she just saw it as a chance to touch base with admissions at her favorite schools.

Yeah my only deal is that I want to take 2nd year college Chem and biology senior year outside of school and juggling that with ap french 4 (which I would struggle with) would be hard. Also wouldn’t it be more beneficial to do more college level science?

For the most part, it’s true that most colleges like when students stick to a foreign language all four years. But be cautious, you don’t want this class to drag down your GPA. If you feel you can handle the class, it would be beneficial for you to take it. But always remember: college admissions is a crapshoot. Even if you take this class, some top schools may accept you, and some may not. Best of luck!
