What's more about the connection of MHC beyond MHC esp. colleges???

MHC is part of the 5 CC. You can take almost any class and join any club at the other 4 schools, and the exchange buses run until 2 AM.
The 5 CC is the main reason I applied ED 2 to Smith instead of MHC. Smith has the open curriculum and PRAXIS, and MHC has the Statistics department ;)

And then there's the 12 College Exchange Program, which allows you to study for one semester at one of the participating schools.

You may not be able to take classes at the others until sophomore year, but you are free to study at any of the other four colleges after that. Check with MHC's admissions office for the details. You may not be able to take a class at, say, Amherst if it is also available at MHC.

It's the kind of transfer ? Or else plz explain.

Um, I'm not exactly clear what your question is. Are you asking whether you can transfer to the other colleges? No - at least, not outside the schools usual transfer process. Do the credits transfer? Yes. You take a class at another school, and MHC will put it on your MHC transcript. There is no additional tuition cost because a course taken on another campus is treated as though you took it at MHC.

If you want to know about the physical transfer between colleges, then you should know that there's a free bus for students. As I understand it, it loops to all five colleges, so it can take an hour to get where you want to go, depending on where you start and where you end.

You can take classes on other campuses spring semester of your freshman year, unless you are a dance major, in which case there are exceptions. You can take a class at Amherst even if it is available at MHC. Certain departments are just stronger elsewhere. If you'd prefer to take biology at UMass, you can be easily granted permission to take it. Science classes are much bigger there, and thus easier to *get through". I have friends taking classes elsewhere that are available here; Mount Holyoke doesn't care, as long as you have a big-enough (or small enough) courseload.

Thanks for clearing that up, MH2010. My daughter is at Smith, and her understanding was obviously incomplete. We just knew that she couldn't take any classes elsewhere this past fall, although she almost asked for an exception because she was initially locked out of a major course. She is looking forward to possibly taking film at UMass and writing at Amherst.

The five college area is wonderful!

Are the additional tuition fees required? How much and can one get scholarship for the additional course she takes out of MHC inside 5CC?

No additional tuition fees are required for 5 College courses. That's the whole point.

Thanks everyone for all the information. Plz post any other information you know about 5 C consortium.

What my D has shared with me about the consortium is that it's great in theory, but tricky in "real life". Granted she's a first year at MHC but she doesn't have a car and that makes scheduling more difficult, and makes a 90 minute class potentially stretch to 180 minutes once she adds in the bus rides.

A friend of hers (also a first year) is attempting a class off campus this coming term, without a car. This will give my D a more precise understanding of how "easy" or "difficult" the concept is, without a car.

The consortium was a big draw for her, so of course we hope there's ample opportunity to use it.

The convenience of the consortium is that a lot of the good classes at the other colleges are offered as seminars on Fridays or after 4 PM (so it presents little conflict).

I don't know the current rules about taking a 5 college course in your 1st year....but....many years ago...it was a little easier in Junior and Senior year. Not because of regulations....just because there was more time in the schedule to get to and from the other campuses. Intro courses usually have more actual course time...and meet more days a week...than upper level seminars. So...it's easier to set aside the time for a bus trip when most of your courses only meet once or twice a week...versus an intro course that meets 3 times a week.

I think it's more common to own and use a car now...and kids coming from the US...especially suburban areas... aren't as willing to take the time to use mass transit...but, in addition to taking courses at the other schools, I was on the bus at least once or twice each weekend to attend an activity at UMass, or shop in Northampton.

Can a MHC student take all courses in her major at any other of the 4 college and study rest of the courses at MHC?

If you really want to pursue a major at one of the other colleges, I suggest you go there. You really shouldn't attempt taking all of the classes in your major elsewhere; you'll end up having a hard time getting someone to be your thesis advisor, and you'll have a terrible time getting the department to respect you as a major.

Not that I'd want to study a major at a college other than MHC but I was just curious. Thanks for the your response!

Everyone, plz post your experience of 5cc...
