5 in AP English Language

In May 2009, I'll be taking the AP exams and I need to get a 5 in English Language.

However, my English performance in the SAT so far has been mediocre:
(I took the SAT 1 twice)
1) CR:600 W:610 (April 2006)
2) CR:580 W:680 (December 2008)

Is a 5 in English Language doable?

Thanks in advance. :)

It's very unlikely that you will score a 5 on the AP English Language exam given those SAT scores. Just to give you some examples of classmates of mine ...

Guy 1 - SAT CR: 700 -> 4 on AP English Language
Guy 2 - SAT CR: 640 -> 3 on AP English Language
Girl 1 - SAT CR: 560 -> 2 on AP English Language
Girl 2 - SAT CR: 520 -> 1 on AP English Language

I think it is doable if you prepare properly. My teacher prepared my class very well. PM me for tips - I got a 5 and CR is definitely my weakest on the SAT.

Isn't AP Comp just like the CR reading? What is different about it?

CR does not have essays. The AP is 3 essays plus multiple choice. If you are a good writer but not the best reader, that certainly can be reflected in a 5 on the AP but a relatively lower score on CR.

what are the essays about? how could one study for the essays?

There is one "synthesis" essay (like a DBQ) in which you are arguing a side based on 6 provided sources that you need to cite at least 3 of in your essay. There is one essay on literary techniques in which you are given a passage that you need to analyze in terms of a prompt given. There is one essay that is an argument essay for whcih you will be given a blurb or a little bit of information and then you need to argue for one side (essentially a persuasive essay).

You could study for the essays by using the practice ones in the Cliffs book. Actually write them out, don't just tell yourself what you would have written.

The essay sound pretty simple, and I thought they were on the AP. What it really comes down to is being to organize yourself, come up with some outside information that is relevant, and apply it. Also, you must be able to do decently well on the multiple choice - practice that as well

not true^^^

i had a 610 on the reading the month after I took the AP exam, and I scored a 4.

Well, I said "can be reflected" not "will be." While some people get 5s and 500s, others get 3s or 4s and 700s. It obviously varies based on the person. My point was to tell the OP that getting 580 and 600 does not mean a 5 is impossible.

And a 4 is still an excellent score, BigWeight.

Is CliffsAP really helpful? I have it and I recently looked at it..the practice tests looked pretty good.
Feedback?

Well er, I received a 5 on AP lang and my relative SATs were:

CR: 700 Writing: 710 Essay: 12

My advice is to reeaally know your rhetorical devices, as if you know them the questions they ask about them are basically free points. Sharpen your CR skills for sure, I recommend doing lots, lots, lots, and lots, and oh wait, more lots, of practice AP lang MC tests.

Even if you kick ass on the multiple choice though, you have to be able to write. Soo...write a lot. Honestly, it's just practice. My AP lang teacher was great, all she gave us was PRACTICE...and it paid off, in my case at least.

I got a 4 on my AP Lang last year.
At the time, my CR score was lingering around ~650.

lets see. I had an average of a 500 CR and got a 4. It's doable

690 CR, and a 5 on the exam.

The exam is a piece of cake.

I have a 760 on the CR section, but yet, I’m getting around a 3 low 4ish on the cliff’s practice tests. What can I do to improve. I fail at the multiple choice and get 6’s on the essays. Pretty bad.

Yeah I got 710 on CR…my worst section. I’m hoping for a 4 but in Cliffs, I BARELY get a 4. and that’s IF i get 6s on my essays. I realllllly want a 5 though.

Are the tests in Cliffs just harder or something?

What’s the correlation b/w SAT CR and AP Lang? Which one is easier/harder? If I practice a lot for the AP exam…do you think my SAT CR score will naturally go up?

yea i’m in the same situation as sheng

Well, I got a 690 on CR, also my worst SAT section. And I got a 4 on the Barrons practice test, but in order to get a 9 I must get two 9’s and one 8 on the essays.

AP multiple choice is like SAT on steroid.

It is pretty impossible to get 9s on the essays. (my tutor used to write AP Eng Lang tests). But 8s are quite possible. Its about strategy and timing, since the tests are curved every year. Usually, the average grade on the lit analysis essay is a 3 or 4. On the DBQ style one its usually a 5 or 6 and on the persuasive its usually 6 or 7.

Also the practice tests are a lot harder than the actual thing. and keep in mind that the AP Eng Lang test gets harder every year…

I’m taking the test in May as well (I’m actually an IB student) but I’ve gotten 5s on my practice tests (I get 8 usually on all essays) and my CR score in SAT (first time in march) was a 640…but thats because I’m better at reading english canon compared to the crap they put on the SAT CR section.

I got a 710 and 660 on CR (different tests) and according to Cliff’s I should get a low-middle 4.

My in-class essays have, for the most part, been one number: 7.
