So I wrote a "why Yale?" essay in 356 words, thinking that the word limit was greater. It turned out to be one of my best essays and I really like it. What should I do? The first paragraph doesn't even fit in the box.
Do you think Yale might get annoyed if I put a note in the box asking them to look in the additional information section? or if I send the essay in as an additional essay?

if it is one of your best essyas, truly well written then i would include it, it'll show your enthusiasm. if it is cliched in anyway, it will do more harm than good. if you put it in additional info don't for get to write something like "please see additional info" in the why yale? box :).

Ehh.. just, be careful. They ask for 50 words for a reason--the important part of your applicantion (in their view, at least) is not what's so great about them that makes you want to go there, but strictly about what you're like. You're much, much better off ditching the "Why Yale" essay and having any extra essays be ones that convey a part of you with a more "Why You" approach than anything--after all, they don't need to know why you're picking Yale, but they do need to know why they should pick you.

I think 356 words is pushing it...i don't think you should put more than like 80

I think Yale is pretty strict on their word limits. Writing more than 7 times the word limit doesn't seem very attractive to the adcoms.

if OP needs help, my sis goes to yale and is on break...could ask her to take a look and see if and where to cut words. PM if you need help. good luck

i would try to cut a bit if it is at all possible, but if it isnt and you feel it is a good essay then include it.

:) I just made fun of Harvard for 50 words. It worked!

I think they are looking for something pithy. You could summarize all the great qualities about Yale but anyone could do that. What would be the IT factor that would make you choose Yale over any other school you get into?
