500 Words OR 3500 Characters. . .?

“Your statement should not exceed 500 words or 3500 characters.”

Alright, I’m just asking for what you guys think here.

My personal statement is about 550 words. It is less than 3500 characters. Do you suppose that they mean it must meet both requirements of being under 500 words and 3500 characters, or just one or the other?
I suppose I can cut down if it is necessary.

Under 3500 is fine. They say "or," so that's how it is to be interpreted.

Plus I don't think Brown would mind reading a couple of extra words if it's a good essay!

I'd say your fine, don't compromise your essay by cutting it down 50 words. :)

K, thanks guys, that helps me out alot. I appreciate it!!111

definitely 550 is ok... mine was 660 but still under 3500 characters, and i got in... so fret not.

660 under 3500? usin some short words:P

I don't get the online app's word limits!!!

And I'm wayyy over word limit for the why brown!! I don't know what to do!!!
Is it better just to apply using the paper app and attach the why brown?

wow, how much over are you? Mine was actually way under. Are you being as concise as you could be? I don't think it's really necessary to attach a separate sheet....and you can always preview to see if the online app will cut off your extra. If not, you can still submit it online even if it is a little long. But I would suggest trying not to go too far over.

ok it's 362 words now (the why brown thing)
