5k vs. 20k vs. 27k

5k for Hunter College

20k for SUNY Geneseo

or

27k for Bard College.

I'll be majoring in Economics. What would you choose?

I would go with Hunter, but out of curiousity, did you apply to Baruch?

How are you paying those amounts? By loan? Are parents on board about paying this? Can they pay it without putting them in a bad financial situation?

If you were my son, you’d have my blessing to pick the one you liked best, because they are all under what we told him we could pay. I personally like Geneseo best, but it would be his decision.

If you have to borrow those amounts, Hunter, a very good school would be the choice I would strongly advocate.

Those are the prices of attending the school.

My parents would be able to cover 5k-10k of cost, the rest will have to be a PLUS loan.

Go for Hunter. It might actually turn out to be better for you than the more expensive choices, too.

$40K in PLUS loans over 4 years to go to Geneseo, means payments for 14 years, 10 at around $570 a month. That’s the sentence you are imposing on them, and that’s if they are still able to pay $10K a year with the added burden of the loan payments.

Are you paying for any of this? Unless you pick Hunter, you should really be looking for a job , multiple jobs to help pay for your education. You should also be considering taking the Staffords which are a better interest rate. If you have any need according to FAFSA, it is possible some of those loans could be subsidized. That would reduce your parents’ loan burden tremendously and make Geneseo more affordable. You can borrow about $27K in your name over 4 years. Even splitting the loan burden would be a good move, perhaps, you taking the full Staffords and your parents helping you pay back some of it since it is a better interest rate deal.

Go to Hunter. Consider transferring to Baruch which has a stronger Econ program
