Okay, so I recently found out I got into the school of my adolescent dreams - NYU. However, I got in the GSP (General studies) program instead of the College of Arts & Science that I applied to. Plus, they are offering zero dollars in financial aid. I really don't think I want to be in $120,000 + debt.

Then, I found out I got into Sarah Lawrence with $27,000 financial aid & it costs around 50 grand per year.
I also got into Bard with a $24,000 scholarship per year & it costs $46,000 per year there. In the end, I would still have to take out loans for around 100k.

My dilemma is that I wanted to live in the city because I love it, it has great opportunities for jobs, internships, art shows, etc. Plus, NYU would look great on any resume. However, my parents have said that they want me to pick the best and most affordable school. I want to major in either art history or English - does anyone have any advice?

$120,000 is an almost unimaginably large amount of debt. It would take you a really really long time to pay that off and would be a lot of hard work. True, NYU has more of what you really really want, but will cost a huge amount of money. Unless you can figure out some way to make NYU more affordable, I think that you have little choice but to go to a school that is.

Yes, you should certainly try to negotiate, but know (you probably already do, but still) that NYU is notoriously stingy. So..don't get your hopes up. Also, it seems that your parents are not paying very much for your college? If this is true, you will unfortunately be out of luck--colleges usually treat applicants as if their parents are paying, and base their finaid packages on parents' ability to pay.

Yeah my grandpa said he's going to try and bargain with them (he is a financial planner so he knows) but yeah, NYU is the worst school for financial aid. Oh well. Thanks for the help

Trendy, I would pick NYU. its expensive, but ur money u will get in return is a lot greater. networking and job opportunities for NYU grads are amazing. u can always use really low interest loans in which u dont pay till after u graduate. if at any point ur interested in business, they have a top biz school in which i assure u, u will land sweet jobs if u graduate from there.

Bard is ur next choice. if u have after doing all the research on financing that his humanly possible and come up with no way of paying for NYU, then go to Bard. i dont think its a better choice but still is a good school. Its just NYU has so much prestige and name recognition its hard to pick Bard over it but money is always a matter.

Sarah Lawrence: U have to be really familiar on what ur getting urself into. its a "different" type of school in many aspects, especially in grading policies and the way things are run around there. Recieved very little name recognition as well. I would not pick it.

If you're comfortable at SLC I'd go there..son will be there in the fall. He loves NYC and the proximinity. if you think you would miss out on the internships in NYC, and feel you're a good fit for SLC, go there. Just my opinion.
