~600 on SAT II Chem and majoring in Chemistry. How will that affect decisions?

My excuse is that I took the test before finishing my AP Chemistry class and a really bad test-taker (my SAT and ACT show that as well. My GPA and course load are excellent) , but I'm still really interested in pursuing a major in chemistry. However, my under-average SAT II score is really gonna bring me down...How will listing chemistry as my intended major affect decisions from top tier colleges?

It's not going to kill you, but it will be a negative.

Hopefully my supplement essay will demonstrate my love for chemistry...

Listing chem as your intended major with that score isn't really going to hurt you any more than if you were to list, say, biology, as your intended major.

In other words, not much consideration is placed on your intended major with regard to your transcript.

I wrote an essay on how much I love physics, but I scored a 630 on the SAT II haha!! My excuse is that I have only learned half of the materials on the test. Anyways, I don't think they will know that though. I didn't explain it.

@ AeroEngineer3141 - Ok, thanks for clearing it up for me.

@ thankyouall - That's exactly my situation...

its gonna be an extreme negative for sure. colleges hate that. if u weren't ready to take the SAT II, why did u take it?

@AeroEngineer, I talked to the admissions counselor at Yale, when I got 690 on Bio, and said they recommended that I take it once more....so yes, its a big factor; but like always it depends to what kind of school u are applying....

Isn't a 600 on chem a really low percentile? I would take it again if I were you.

Isn't it too late to take it again? Or should I take it again in Jan and resubmit my new score?

Check with your college to see if January is okay.

Hopefully they will...because otherwise my decision will probably decrease in chances.

depends...what schools u applyin to?

I know this post is not helping you at all but the SAT Chem test is basically a joke. My school doesn't offer Chemistry AP, but I did end up getting a flat A in my Chemistry honors class junior year, and this class is notorious for being the toughest class at my school. This year as a senior, I was accepted into Wesleyan University's High School Scholars program where I was allowed to take one class there. I ended up taking the standard freshman class of "Principles of Chemistry I." I ended up getting an A in the class; in a class full of bright Wesleyan students, it was one of the highest grades. I ended up taking the SAT Chem test after studying for it for about a week and ended up getting a 680, which is not good. Basically, my point is that the SAT Chem doesn't do a good job at all of predicting success. This is one of the main reasons why I am so against SAT Subject tests in general. Sorry for the rant.

I wouldn't take mine if they don't require it, but they do! My physics teacher got an infection twice last year. So basically I taught myself for almost an half semester. Be barely finished half of the chapters. This year I am taking online and it is a full year course. As of now, I am only on thermodynamics.

I got a 630 in physics and I'm majoring in engineering. i guess same boat as you guys.

I'm applying to Cornell, Duke, U Illinois, U Mich, UT Austin, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Penn State.
