I recently received my SAT scores, and got a 610 math and 800 CR. I'm trying to get into Cornell or Columbia, but my guidance counselor told me that they don't even really consider students who get below a 700 in any section. My GPA isn't spectacular (3.8) and I'm afraid they're going to discount me just because of my low math scores. Does anyone know if this is really true?

To state it that definitively is to deceive. All applicants at holistically reviewing schools such as Columbia and Cornell are considered.

Having scores below 700 causes one to fall victim to the psychological jump that occurs for scores that don’t start with “7.” A 610 will hurt you quite a bit, but it won’t render you unacceptable.

Can we trade? I’ll give you my math abilities if you give me your reading abilities. ^_^

On a more serious note, I think the 610 will look pretty bad quite honestly in the competitive pools at those universities. Math is supposed to be the EASIEST to pull up.

To tell you the truth i dont know why many CCer’s are saying that u need a 1500+ for columbia/cornell there is alot more to the application than 3 scores. In my school out of the 70 people that got in Cornell last year the avg sat score was 1340 gpa weighted (94) and 20 people that got in columbia avg sat 1360 gpa weighted(96). Also these scores are inflated because of people applying to mit/Princeton and using Cornell for backup.

^It’s hard to believe that 20 people from your high school got into Columbia last year. It’s also hard to believe that the average SAT score for Columbia admits last year was 1360 (regardless of the number of admits).

well pbr go to bths.edu-> COLLEGE OFFICE ->ADMIT STAT,the first link will under files will show gpa, sat scores, the only two ivys that broke 1400 by a little are upenn and harvard
also this isnt the full student report, ~1/5 of the students actually donate their info. and i hope you know its out of 1600?
