Is anyone going to UF with only the 75% bright futures...I qualified for everything for the 100% but i came shy with the test scores :( ...Im applying for a few scholarships but most are for tuition only (arrgh...i dont need money for tuition..i need money for dorms and other things!!). Also my EFC was roughly $8500, so hopefully I could get a little bit of aid.

Also no prepaid..i moved from NY four years ago, and my mom wasnt really aware of it until now, she opened one for my bro whos in elementary school, so hes lucky he got a head start.

Don't forget that you have until the very end of 12 grade to qualify for the 100% BF. I think there are still two SAT dates and at least one more ACT before May. You may want to check that out before just settling for the 75%.

Hi,

I qualified for the 75% Bright Futures, but I've also received a full scholarship through some program called the Florida Opportunity Scholarship Program, which pays for everything (no loans)

justthemom.....i was preety elated that i took my sat/act and got accepted into the college i want, but i dont think i want to take the time to do it again...right now im worrying about writing essays for scholarships. yes i know that if i could achieve a higher score to qualify for 100% i would not have to worry so much on scholarships, but i rather do that instead (strange, yes i know)

also, to the previous reply, how did you qualify for the scholarship? Is it a local level scholarship, if not let me know, more money the better. I live in Marion County

ufstudent,

It was based on a non-merit based factors, and I didnt even apply for it. It's mainly because neither parents have an undergraduate degree and the income of my mother, who is my sole guardian

Oooh. I'm first generation also, but I'm not dependent solely on my mothers income. I kinda am, since she remarried, she still is the one who financially supports me. But i cant use the "father is not in my life" story, since she remarried, so technically i dont come from a single-parent home, although it seems so.

Google "Florida Student Assistance Grant". You might qualify. It is a need based grant awarded to students with "substantial" need. UF will determine your eligibility and determines award amounts.

Regarding BF... If you are close to getting the 100%, you should really take another test. You can take the June tests to qualify, also. :-)

I do believe that you need to have finished all testing and other qualifying (volunteer work) before the completion of 12th grade. In our county graduation is in May so the June test would not be a qualifying test score as far as BF is concerned.

If you have read somewhere that states that differently I would LOVE to read this as my child just misses the cut off. :o( Thanks!!

As you say that, Justthemom, you're right. They look at everything up to your 7th semester, which is including the first semester of your senior year. I remember talking to my guidance counselor about it, asking when we will recieve notification about BF and she told me around April(?), since they are just now sending out transcripts. I took my SAT in december so it's too late for me now. But to no worry, I am applying for a scholarship that I am guranteed to get as long as I turn in all the necessary items....I love how some say they will write a check in your name, but going to the college. Makes it seem as if they are giving you money and then you have to give it right back up, they should just write it in order to the college...

PS..its funny how earlier you told me i had to the very end of 12th grade to retake ;) i didnt notice it either though

Like I said, I think you can take the SAT right up to the end of your 12th grade.

I'm sorry but you are both mistaken. I am a college advisor at a public high school in Florida. You can take the qualifying tests (SAT or ACT) through June 30th. The initial eligibility (or spring eligibility evaluation) happens after 7th semester when transcripts are sent to Bright Futures. (Transcripts are sent to BF 3 times per year.) You should receive initial notification about your eligibility in April based on 7th semester transcripts. Final eligibility (or summer eligibility evaluation) occurs in June after final transcripts are submitted to Bright Futures. I had two students who received their BF awards based on their June tests last year. I can't post a link here...it is apparently against CC rules (..they've cut my posts before). But if you go to Google and search ""florida academic scholars eligibility requirements" in quotes...the first result will take you to the BF page that discusses eligibility. Go down to the table where it says "Test Scores". The last says that tests taken through June 30th are admissable. Take another test! :-)

Thank-you so much for this information! I called the BF office just to make sure and sure enough, youre correct!!! I had always been told that the kids had to finish all qualifying by the end of the senior year. This is a huge relief. Thanks! :)

Of course I'm correct, hee, hee! Glad you verified with BF...it is exactly what I would have done :-)

what's Florida Opportunity Scholarship Program? is it still too late too apply for it?...i'm gonna google it

Do you mean the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant? These are limited and awarded by the school based on FAFSA. Pell grant recipients have prioroty. Pell grants are guaranteed to be available to qualified students. FSEOG funds are limited.

I didnt apply for the FOSP, UF sent me a letter with all the details.

Here is an excerpt from the letter of the criteria it is based on
Who Qualifies for the Florida Opportunity Scholarship?

(Recipients must meet all of the following criteria)

Florida resident as determined by the University Registrar

Admitted to an undergraduate program beginning Summer 2006 or later

Neither parent has earned an associate's or bachelor's degree

Parent's total annual income is less than $40, 000

Total financial assets other than a home are less than $100,000

Demonstrate financial need as determined by the FASFA
So I'm guessing the letter gets sent out to those who meet those criteria..
